Pull-Ups Vs Age

I am interested in something. If you are interested in helping me figure this out -

Please state:
1. The maximum number of pull-ups you can do, AND
2. Your age in years.

No need to get too technical in defining "pull-up". Not negatives, not assisted. Can be palm out, palm in, palms facing each other, whatever you like. It has to be in 1 standard Earth gravity.

As for "age", just regular old age in Earth years is fine.

I'm 59....can also do zero.

I think in my prime....when I was in my early 30's....I could still do zero.

When I was in 7th grade, I could do 10.

Although have been very athletic throughout my life, I've never had good upper body strength (played tennis, basketball and swam).

Where's that fit in the bimodal distribution?!

I'm hitting the double-nickle in February. If I start now and really work at it I might get up to zero by then.

Never had the pull-up gene.

3 at 71, but I don't do any specific physical training that involves that set of muscles. I do a decent amount of digging, carrying, lifting, & hauling working around my place though. At our Thanksgiving get together yesterday, I did climb a 15 ft. climbing rope - using my feet to help. Of the half dozen who tried it ranging from 22 to 50 (excluding me) one of the twenty four year olds did it on the second try & the 22 year old did it without using his feet to help. The effort was quite a contract for me, since I set the school record for the rope climb in the ninth grade.

Between the age of 15-30 I could routinely do 20 pull-ups. I still have an active job and lifestyle but at 57 I haven't addressed a pull-up bar in 10 years. My guess is significantly less than 20. Maybe 5-8?? I'll have to test this on my next visit to the fitness park.

In all seriousness... When I was climbing regularly, I could grab a door frame and bust out 5-10 pretty easily... Hell on the ol fingers though.

I can do 0 pull-ups at 51. Shoulder injuries in my younger years combined with arthritis today means I can barely raise my arms above my head. Totally sucks.

I cannot do any pullups - not tried lately. But I can hike 30 miles in a day which I did last August to celebrate my 67th birthday. My heart rate was reaching in the 180's climbing hills as verified by my portable gps. Doc says my heart rate max should be in 110-120 range LOL. So I would consult your doc on what your max heart rate should be reaching doing these pullups or any kind of exercise.

Markus could offer some insight or guidelines on max heart rate. Anybody else or cardiologists have info on pushing the limits with exercise?

I am 46. I did 20 at the gym today after reading this post.

I rarely do more then 10 of anything at the gym, so 20 is a lot of reps for me.

When I was a Marine a little over 20 years ago 20 pull-ups was the standard. Last year I helped my girlfriends son join the Marines. He started out at 21 not being able to do a single pull-up. After six months of working out with me he was up to 10-12. There are a few other kids at the gym trying to get into The Corps. None of them started out doing any pull-ups either. They are both pushing ten now as well.

At 48, it's been awhile since I felt the need to try, but I bet I could still do 3-5.
