Something better than Quicken?

I'm fed up with Quicken crashing and the difficulty with purging and re-installing. Is there another software that you guys use just for home use?

For what? Balancing your check book, creating a budget, paying bills? What features/functions are you using or looking for?

Pretty sure you could write Excel scripts to do all that...

QuickBooks works fine for that as well. Find the cheapest, oldest version you can and go to town. AFAIK the forced updates only pertain to payroll services and can be ignored otherwise.

BUT-----Intuit, in general, is going down the ****ter IMO.

That is what my wife does...everything is on Excel and she can get all the online stuff ported in.

We owe less that $100k on the farm and are finally at the point of fixing the kitchen, out buildings, etc. I am very budget conscious, as is she. During the loan process the folks were amazed at her spreadsheets, which are not tied to Quicken, etc.

We track everything in Excel and it is much more portable than other programs she has tried, even into tax software. We run two businesses as well a my retirement income, our job related incomes and investments.

I am, of course, on allowance and am not privy to her machinations.

Better that way.

I've been using Quicken 2000 since it came out to do essentially the above functions and have never had any problems with it ? Perhaps because I never bothered to update it.. who knows?

yup Q2000 never gave me a problem. Updated to 2004 gave me issues and Q2013 just won't install.

SEE Finance. It's free and you can import your Quicken data into it.

The interface takes some time to get used to, but you don't have to give Quicken any more of your money. (Except maybe at Tax time, if you use Turbotax, like I do.)

You can always use what the founder of Quicken called his only true competition:

I have been using quicken since the days of 5.25 inch floppy install disks. It works fine for me and I have a data file that goes back to the 80s. It never crashes on my system.

The online interface with your bank and other accounts is generally not supported for more than a few years on Quicken, which effectively forces you to upgrade if you rely on that feature.

All pretty easy, according to her. She took an Excel class at the local community college specifically geared to finance and business. She then down loaded all the stuff they recommended.

We used Quicken for years and were tired of the costly upgrades, etc. We also do all our wn taxes and excel ports in really well.
