I agree. I think you have a moral obligation (to both the intruder and yourself) to at least let them know in no uncertain terms that you intend to shoot them, and tell them to leave. The vast majority of burglars will make for the door. Giving up your location is in fact important so they can avoid you. If they chose to fight, so be it. I think its important to make sure that its not a family member, or a non aggressive person who is drunk or mentally incapacitated in some way.

Do I feel you should be legally required to give a warning? No.

While you may reveal your location in your home (unless you pipe your message through an intercom system), I believe you setup the situation effectively to the intruder - whether that intruder is an innocent, or a perp: the way that person reacts to your message will determine the outcome of the situation.

If the intruder choses to attack you, hopefully you are in a defensive position (for you and others in the house) where you have the tactical advantage (effective cover, good line of sight...etc) and you have minimized the opportunity for the perp to gain the upper hand. If you need to move to another room (child's room, for example), hopefully have have prepared yourself and can effectively clear the space between you and the destination, and are prepared to take action if necessary.

To the experts out there -- is this a feasible situation, or a bad idea?

was told by a local LEO that in the event that there is a intruder, shoot them dead; and if they cross the threshold of the front door drag the body back in the house-

this skirts the edge of Oregon state law

and -- the dead have nothing to tell--

With all due respect, I have no moral obligation to shout a warning to an intruder in my house.
Does he/she have the same obligation to warn me/my family?
Do not care if they have "emotional or mental issues", I don't know nor care, they are in my house uninvited.

Personally, the only warning you'll get from me if you break into my house is the faint click of a safety coming off....unless I grav my 94 for some reason.

I saw this posted on our local neighborhood FB page. There was a peeping tom incident. Anyone know anything about what Linda is stating? I don't.

You need to let the intruder know that you are armed and if they enter the room you will shoot them. You need to make sure you are on the phone with 911 to make sure all of this is recorded. If someone is running away, you cannot shoot them. Please check out NRA.Org. They have safety courses and are there to teach law abiding citizens how to properly use a firearm.

Steve -
I have taken some firearm safety classes including a couple of NRA courses. I believe what Linda is saying is a bit misleading, and in on particular case, incorrect.

I do not need to be afraid for my life. Fear = adrenaline dump = loss of fine motor skills. Just as I leave my emotions at the pits when I'm on the racetrack, I must learn to leave behind my fear/anger/etc when I am in an active shooter situation.

I do not need to do anything that would prevent me from defending myself. If I must choose between retrieving my phone and retrieving my firearm, I will choose the tool that goes bang and can eliminate the threat. If I have the ability to call 911, I will do so, but only after I have secured my firearm and taken up a defensive position. If I have the ability to tell the intruder to leave, and give him a clear picture of what he will face if he choses not to leave (a loaded firearm pointed at him) I will do so. But I do not need to call 911 or warn him, if I decide not to. That said, both of those are, in my opinion, good measures, but not necessary measures.

Spoon enthusiasts and Monday morning quarterbacks have a lot in common...

Z man i agree with your post protect yourself first, the whole purpose of having 911 on an open line and telling the perp to get out and you will shoot will help in court if a DA decides to charge you. It will also help if the dead guys family decides to sue in civil court.

As mentioned earlier, this is far more relevant in states with more liberal firearms laws. An intruder in my house can be legally shot dead, that is the letter of the law in KS. No need for warnings, fear for my life, etc. If you break into someone's home, you are fair game.
