Insurance - Need help

I have a 1983 911sc, insured with Hagerty Insurance for the past 8 years. My youngest son is about to get his drivers license. That will make 4 drivers and 4 cars in the household. It seems like agreed value collector car insurance requires that there be a daily driver car for each member of the household, in addition to the classic car. Is anyone aware of insurance company that will offer agreed value classic car insurance without the requirement that I have one additional car than household drivers?

Add him onto the daily driver policy, or change the pcar policy to reflect true usage?

IIRC, Hagerty's classic car rates are designed only for limited use of the insured vehicle(events and/or weekend outings), and only by the insured driver.
Their extremely low full-collision rates reflected such when I had them.

At the same time, once your son gets his license, would you otherwise have purchased a 4th car for him (if you didn't have the Porsche as #4)? Or would you have 3 DD cars for the 4 drivers in the household?

The kicker is that we only drive one car on a regular (daily) basis. Wife drops the kids at school and me at the train in the morning. The other 3 vehicles do less than 2,000 miles per year. Pcar and 90 BMW 325i are only driven 1 day a week. The kids will share the 4th car.

When you check with Haggerty, see if what you told us makes any difference. Or is there a way (unfair to your son) to specifically exclude him from driving your Porsche or other vehicles to satisfy the ins co?

OP is correct. Haggerty agreed value requires a DD car for every driver in the household.

OP should just buy the cheapest POS he can find, register and insure in sons name from day one, liability only with lowest limits allowed then park the car and forget about it.

Satisfies the Haggerty requirement and when the kid eventually gets a nice daily driver he'll have a history of insurance meaning he gets out of the inflated priced high risk pool sooner.

Yes if I didn't have the porsche, I would only have the 3 cars.

I will talk with Hagerty again and will try to explain the situation better. Neither boy is allowed to drive the porsche so I would be ok specifying that if it helped. I would even be ok with forgoing the low cost of collector car insurance but want to make sure that I keep the agreed value clause. Can you get agreed value on non collector insurance? Have checked with my other insurance company and they will not cover agreed value for other than collector.

You can do both around here. I can get regular car insurance with agreed value on my 993(an appraisal is required ). Which would also cover all drivers in the house but would be much more expensive or I can also retain Haggerty insurance if I sign a statement acknowledging that a driver under 25 is NOT insured on the 993

That's another option. Not sure if I want to go to 5 cars but certainly worth considering and running the numbers.

My 911 is insured with my the same company that has all three cars and the house.

The 911 policy specifically states the 911 is insured for my wife and myself only no one under 25 ever. A mechanic or service personnel are allowed to drive it as well. So a valet could drive it in theory if I ever allowed that. Not likely. I can drive it as much as 5,000 miles in a year but if I go on a road trip that mileage restriction is extended.

I pay $22 per month for fuul coverage and a agreed replacement value of $24,950. At $25,000 I need a second professional appraisal. 75 cents a day is not bad for insurance.

As several have suggested, I suspect that an agreement with Hagerty that your sons are not allowed to drive the Porsche will make the issue go away. If they aren't flexible try Leland-West, unlike Hagerty they allow driving to work and with the PCA discount were cheaper than Hagerty on my Carrera.

To add another similar voice to the choir, American Collectors here, anyone under 25 is excluded from coverage, so no issue. Around 250/yr.

If they can not accept it go over to Grundy (Philadelphia insurance)

Hey, I learned how to drive in my 356 (3 years before getting a license) and drove the 911 right after Dad bought it (not frequently, and not alone, but at 17) !

I have a very similar policy on the 356, insured via State Farm. No milage restrictions, only restriction is no daily driver for to-work or to-school. Helps that my agent is a old car freak (he's into '60s Corvettes)

That's a pretty poor way to share your passion with kids. Considering that a modern V6 Accord can wax an SC in most measures of performance, it's not like unleashing them on the world with a modern 911 Turbo.

I agree. My kids will be driving the 911 as soon as they can reach the pedals and have learned to drive a manual on another car with a cheaper clutch. Not a lot, and never alone, but they'll certainly drive it.

My son was solo'ing the 356 to high school and out and about as a senior.

He is a great kid and he was driving a really slow car that corners well and brakes just fine.

If I can get a 2002 in the garage, he and his sister will drive that as well...I owned a 2002 in HS and my first Porsche in college. They are not Tiffany Lamps.

If your son has no vested interest in the car, get ready for hart break if you let him drive it.
