I think the "Paint Job" is about not hiding that it's made from manila folders but still having all of the details there.
The hinges and door locks are really well done and the engine thrust reverse mechanism is brilliant.

Further to Embraer's post... After seeing what he's done with cardboard can you imagine what he could with proper modeling materials?

Imagine the time taken on this..

Or even Pierre Scerri's 512PB

Or even this amazing scratchbuilt P51.

As Embraer said he will have a job after that video. He can keep doing what he loves.
Hats off to the guy. I strive for that kind of patience every day. He was committed.

Recently my guitarist wanted a pedalboard. I just gave him the first sample of patience and pride of work. He's never built anything before. I simply walked him through the steps. Not much, just plywood, table saw, Kreg jig then stain. He was over the moon. Now he wants to build a 4 x 12 cabinet.

He doesn't need a job, apparently.

But seriously, if you go have a look at his videos you will see that he is using illustrator 2d for drafting. With 5 years to spare, he did not want to learn a better drafting program. He has no interest in efficiency. This is likely meditation to him and making it faster would disturb the state of mind it puts him in. No need for a good drafting program or a laser cutter ...

That said, after looking at a few more videos, I am really impressed. The engines of the plane are incredibly complicated and some of the interior pieces, down to the kitchens and bathrooms details are just ridiculous. Total waste of time, but the skill is definitely there.

Don't you think the line between genius and obsession (or greater/worse) is blurry in this/these cases? I'd say that the 777 creator will need to focus his energy on a different medium to be considered a genius...not that it matters to him.

Thr only difference between guys like this and mass murderers is a chemistry degree and some sociopath tendencies. :-)

Seriously it is impressive in the patience and dedicating yourself to a piece like this... ?..but not for people like me to really understand the 'Why."

THIS is a paper airplane model !

I knew a guy who blew off a lot of his classes in college to build models from scratch including an amazing one of the space shuttle Columbia complete with operating cargo bay doors and working landing gear. It actually had every single thermal tile etched in - amazing detail. He ended up quitting school and got picked up by Lucas doing (among other things) models for the Star Wars movies. Think he ended up doing fine for himself... To thine own self be true... No everyone should go to college and rack up $150k in non-dischargeable student loans...

In collage -you get teachers to teach you what they have been taught.
They teach yet most have never done anything .
Empty suits Blabbering about stuff they have only read about.
If you really know your subject, it has been proven over and over again you need not school, but just go do it.
Wright bros

Einstein
and million more.
School is for those of status quo, or just no natural ability.
This guy has not only made this thing, he has spent HOURS doing the math to scale it all out.
i guarantee you he will do something great !

Agreed, and most importantly...he doesn't care about $$.

He is in it for his personal "why"... A purpose that keeps him laser focused and motivated everyday....

Truly inspirational to me.

He obviously put a lot of effort into documenting is work too. I'm sure the videos are part of the project as a whole.

I dunno. I think he certainly has great skills and does things that that most can't but somehow, it doesn't seem to satisfy the criteria for genius. If he had dreamed up a 777 and then executed its creation as well as he had...ok. I'm not trying to take anything away from the guy or what he is doing...it's awsome!! But there seems to be a creativity element that is a bit short of genius. As always, YMMV.

Those who don't understand what art is use the words art and artist loosely.

WOW! Why such disdain for formal education? Collage obviously wasn't for you; perhaps you should try college?

I agree. However, along with the words art and genius, the word creative is also very loosely used. The guy's not an artist, he's a craftsman. A craftsman can be an artist and vice versa - or not. He's not an artist because he's not "creating", he's "constructing", "manufacturing", "making" something. There's really nothing creative about his work...incredibly skilled, yes, absolutely.

Given that he dropped out of school and has immersed himself in this one, intense project for the last five years makes me question his life priorities. And I can't help but wonder if he has a social life.

Bottom line, if this guy was a significant person in my life, I'd be concerned for his mental health and welfare. I'm thinking that Savant Syndrome might apply.

You all are attributing reason to (grade c IMO) artwork, involving dropping out of college.

Onlookers.

Perhaps there is no reason....

A knew a guy who had a 13-year-old son who would build model sports stadiums out of cardboard. Stunning detail: seats, grass, signage - incredible stuff. And he hand-made everything. The models would be the size of a medium size folding table and he had a bunch strewn throughout the room. Apparently he just imagined his creations - wasn't a big student of stadiums or architecture.

Afterburn, I agree that college is not the only route to an education, however your argument may hold up better if you correctly spell college instead of collage. Collage is a great art form, but I am pretty sure there are many educational routes to learn it, just down the street from my place is a lovely little scrap book store that has classes for collage....
