Totally. I'll go upstairs if I suddenly think my shoes are misaligned in the closet, just to straighten them out. Total wacko.

My first "professional" employee shook my hand, thank me for the work and walked off into the sunset after 2 days of employment. I made a feeler gauge and ran it through all the cabinet doors he hung. When he saw that, he laughed and was never heard from again. I have since learn to calm down and chase after more important things. Still, they hate me hanging around the job site after 3-4 hours with nothing to do. I start checking siht. My guys have been with me for over 14-15 years, so they know what to except. I feel bad for em' sometimes.

I'm going through this now with drywall and paint. I was just about done but thought I could make it a little better. Wrong, do it again. It's a curse.

A couple of quotes from two friends...
Tara (singer/songwriter): "If you know someone who's a little bit OCD and you really want to mess with their head, explain kerning to them." Dennis (graphic artist - said this when he and I worked at the same place): "Perfection is boring." Perfect women, perfect design, perfectly clean house/apartment, perfect wedding, perfect anything.

When I hang casing (even paint grade) I always use a 3/16" block as a spacer. M guys think I am nuts. But its perfect every time, and sometimes is actually faster with this small stick.

I have to ask. Are many of you OCD with only certain things? I am, with only some things but many others I simply don't care. for example, I never proofread (bad deal there I use to catch so much BS from all my teachers). My desk is neat, but not perfect. My wife's desk is perfect. I really think she measures the lamp to make sure it center the desk. the paintings at my house if perfectly level. I use a freaking level to make sure of that. electrical outlets are done the same way. My shoe laces must be the same length if not, I will stripped it off in a crowded room to get em' fix. can't deal, no sir. Holes in my clothes, I could care less.

I have not read all the posts above so I am either lazy or certainly not OCD.
What this thread brings to mind is over analysis leads to paralysis..... G.

My music doesn't need to be perfect, but it should sound distilled and every note or rhythm should find a friend with purpose. That said, I essentially live in a mess. I did the dishes yesterday, so that was good. I think you've got me deconstructing myself. My problem is that if something can't be perfect, I don't even want to start it. So if I don't have time or skill to do something 100%, it just doesn't get done. |

It's a balancing act. And maybe something that comes with age. I generally don't like to start projects unless I know that I can finish them, and finish them with a high degree of quality; some would say I procrastinate, I say that I spend a lot of effort up front to ensure smooth delivery.
But a good example, for me, that I'm learning to leave "well enough" is that my "new to me" 993 has a typical amount of road rash on the front bumper cover. The car is a daily driver for me. I use only the best fluids and parts on the car as I maintain it. Mechanically, the thing is as sound as the day it left the factory. I keep it up. And rather than fret over the small paint imperfections, I enjoy the car as it is. I keep it washed and waxed, but some how look the other way over the "patina". One day I will get to it, but for now...I will leave well enough alone.

I'm not OCD. I just like hobby stuff. My shoe closet is a mess. I need a flashlight to find shoes. I use a $150 flashlight. I researched for a month to buy it. My knife collection is scattered. But every knife, whether I can find it or not is as sharp as I can get it. I chase knife edge sharpness all the time. I just like to tinker. Sent via Jedi mind trick.

When putting out our vitamins, medication, etc. pills, my wife lines everything up according to size. When I do it, I just put them in a pile. Last week, I told her I had noticed I could recognize if they were all there faster when they were in a unorganized pile than when she neatly lined everything up. She always pushes to maintain organization around her. Me not much, although I don't leave large messes. I'm the type who lets things get to a certain point of disorganization & then cleans the place up, which it remains for awhile. I drive her nuts at times, but I think it's just a different way of thinking.
