The crazy bird thread...

At 7 this morning two woodpeckers started jackhammering on our chimney stacks which are metal. Not sure why but I have to investigate why they are doing that .
The noise reverberated throughout the house and it sounded like construction was going on......G.

One of my brother's buddies spent a lot of money for fancy wood siding on his back porch area around the deck. A woodpecker started poking holes in the siding. They are federally protected and you are not supposed to even harass them. He decided to go full force RAMBO on the woodpecker. He dressed up in a ghillie suit and staked out the area. He got the bird with a pellet gun. No more holes in his siding.

This thread has uncanny timing.

On my commute this morning, I witness quite the zany bird on the highway.

Did you know pigeons could fly 65mph!? I didn't until this morning...

Driving down the highway at the head of a large group of cars, I watch this bird swoop down from an overpass and start flapping like crazy. It was like the bird was purposefully racing the car. Flying right at my face height, in the center of the left lane (I was in center lane) staring at me...stare back at it.

This lasted about a mile and by the time the hilarity wore off, I didn't get the I-Phone going quick enough to record it.

Sometimes woodpeckers use their pockets to food out of wood, but sometimes they are banging out a man rhythm to attract the ladies. You know the ladies love a rock star, right?

They looked like a husband/wife team. One woodpecker each chimney. You would think if the male was looking for another female he would be more subtle about it?!Guy

I've had birds do that on ski lifts and bike trails, but never a car - (unless I wasn't paying attention). It's very cool, they'll look right at you and never appear to look ahead!

Crazy birds!

I climbed up on the roof this aft and found nothing for those peckerheads to feed on except possibly caulking on the joints of the chimneys. Sure are noisy. G.

Northern Flickers will rap on metal roofs, ridge vents, etc to amplify the sound to attract a mate.

In Racecar Engineering a month or so back, one columnist was writing about aerodynamics and racecars and shared a little story about watching Pelicans surf a river of 65mph air comng off all the cars on the 405. They would hardly flap at all but be keeping up with cars. Then they'd turn and head to Long Beach.

It is a mating, Stake out territory thing.
Just wait until they start the fight to the death with the bird in your car mirror.
I had one that was getting the cr@p beat out of him by the bird in the mirror. (at least that is what it looked like down the side of the door) If they move to the mirrors the woodpecker will win by breaking the mirror. One year I had to put old socks over my mirrors every time I parked.

We have solar shield tinted windows in our house. So in the spring, the birds fight themselves in the reflection.

Here's an oriole going at it...
