What the? our cat had a stroke !

Our 15+ YO calico cat had not been her normal self last week, mainly doing nothing but sleeping and picking at her food. Monday morning when I went to let her out of the laundry room she couldn't walk, her back legs just weren't working at all and she wobbled and fell when she tried to walk. It was really disturbing to see her like that.

Got her to the vet asap and prepared for the worst. Vet quickly examined her and said she has had a stroke. She ran some blood tests to check kidneys, thyroid, etc and said they were as good as could be expected for a cat that old. Vet gave us some Benzapril to control the hypertension and said that is really all we can do and it is possible the clot(s) could dissolve and she could recover (or not).

As of this morning she is still a bit wobbly but eating and trying to be her old self. As long as she isn't in pain and can get in and out of her liter box we are going to hang in there.

She is not going to be attacking any dogs but things are looking up for her....

Sounds like what happened to one of our cats about ten years ago.

They gave us medication, I think it was way too strong but it could have been a possible stroke now that I read this thread.

Wish you luck, not really in your hands.

Good luck with her recovery.

It's tough when our pets are ailing.

Same exact thing on my cat. She's been wobbling around my house for more than a year. Her appetite is down so she is skinny as heck. Blood work is also surprisingly great. Worst thing is she sometimes falls off of the couch. She is still a pretty happy cat. Good luck.

Our 16 yo Siamese had the same thing happen about two months after we moved to San Antonio last year. Unfortunately, we had to put him down. I still get sad thinking about him. I hope yours is on the mend and best of luck!

Appreciate the good thoughts gentlemen. I know a lot of people don't understand how you can get so attached to a cat but I guess you have to have been there and done that to know. It is amazing the progress she has made. Monday night I didn't think she would make it through the night and today she is navigating quite well though a bit wobbly at times.

I suspect she will be more or less as Vash described his cat post stroke, I hope so anyway. I do think her days of jumping up on the table to sit in the middle of the newspaper when I'm trying to read it or laying on the keyboard when I am trying to type on it are over but I guess we'll have to take what we can get in these circumstances. Just have be pragmatic and keep in mind that at her age it's only a matter of time but until then she will be one well-kept feline.

My 18+ year old cat probably had a stroke a couple weeks ago. Found him prone, eyes wide open and stone cold dead on my patio. Like a typical cat, he was just fine until he wasn't.

RIP Fred

That happened to mine as well. Vet said either a stroke or a heart attack. Lights on...lights off.
