911 Driver Killed in Local Accident

The story was on the news last night. A few more facts came out this morn and I had to drive through the site of the accident on the way to work this morn. I just couldn't figure it out. The P car drove into the lake but the closest access to the lake was basically the opposite direction unless...he was flying. So, divided highway, an east bound Toyota turns north into oncoming traffic and gets tee boned by Pontiac. Both drivers die and a young passenger is critically injured. Along comes the westbound P car, maybe a second or two after the wreck hauling mail. He avoids the fiery wreckage only by swerving across the intersection entering the eastbound lanes. I'm guessing the skid marks from him sliding sideways down the wrong way and into the water are maybe the length of a football field. Divers pulled his body out a few hours later.

I checked on Google Earth. From the point the Porsche would have taken evasive action to the shore is 650 to 700 feet. That's quite a distance. I wonder how fast he was going.

Sounds to me like the Firebird and the Porsche were both going fast, perhaps from a friendly 'race.'

Porsche guy had just let off and was slightly behind.

Firebird kid was looking in his mirror at the Porsche behind him.

Toyota turning left misjudged the CLOSING SPEED of the two fast-moving cars.

Porsche guy was going almost as fast as the Firebird when he tried to perform his unsuccessful evasive action.

RIP to all the unfortunate parties in this incident.

Wow, I've got family that lives in Carbondale. Been to Crab Orchard. Such a violent wrech is not something I would think of happening there... especially one involving a Porsche. But it's been a while since I visited.
