It's no secret that the quality of pop music including rock has dropped off since the 90's - at least she is doing something creative and different. Regardless of whether or not you in particular like it.
The problem is she isn't doing anything creative and different. The folk song has been around for a long time and she hasn't transformed it at all. Maybe she is using awkward phrasing and timing on purpose, or she just doesn't have the chops to make it musical. I'm sure she is loved by young art students - I'll ask my wife.

Like any genre, there are "good" and "bad" examples. There are rappers who have incredible pace, timing, inflection - things that make a long string of words flow and have an effect. There are other rappers who just string words together and it sounds like...a bunch of words strung together.

Same thing with folk singers. Some lambasted Dylan (often with good reason), but while his voice was suspect, his writing, and perhaps more importantly, his phrasing turned long winded lyrics into something more. This woman is no Dylan...

I'm "young," so my mind goes more in the direction of what talents they got those piercings to enhance.

In the immortal words of Chris Rock; "If a girl has a tongue ring, she'll probalby suck your *^%&. If a guy has a tongue ring...he'll probably suck your *^&%."

Great post, Todd.

I didn't realize she hadn't written the song - that does make a difference in my perspective.

OK let's strike the "creative" and we'll just go with "different" for now....lol.

That is actually the new take on delivery and tonality. Deep.

I think you're wrong on both counts. There's been a massive renaissance in pop and rock music since the 90s, it's just that it's not on mainstream radio. The last decade or so has seen a ton of new creative bands, singers, songwriters, etc. but I think (or maybe I just hope) that people looking for real creativity, soul and authenticity have moved beyond commercial radio.

And on your second point, I can't agree more with what Todd said. She's not doing anything at all creative and/or different with the folk song tradition. While I believe there's still far more to be plumbed from those depths, she's just not digging at all, beyond awkward lyrics, that may or may not be on purpose, or, even worse, ironic. That kind of irony is best left back in the last century, IMO.
