And believe me, I've hung out with plenty of guys who are not exactly rocket scientists.

I don't "get" NASCAR, it bores the living crap out of me. I watch one lap on a big screen and my mind goes numb. I don't watch TV at all unless it's on somewhere where I am, oddly enough NASCAR was on Sat. am on the TV on the wall at a friend's house where I was having breakfast. I don't think she was even aware of it, one of many people who just has a TV going in the background in the living room. I think it was qualifying or something, looked like interviewing drivers while cars whizzed by in the BG.

I'll stand by my remark that Tony Stewart is not well-known to the average person in wide swaths of the country. I'm a pretty major gearhead and I barely know who he is. I guess I've heard his name. When it comes to fame, it's all about whether the random person on the street has heard of him. Lot's of people are famous in their own little world, be it poker playing, hula hoop, Porsche parts, etc..

Approach anyone under 80 years old on any street in America. "Ever heard of Rod Stewart?" Yes. "How about Tony Stewart?" The guy on the cooking show? Sounds familiar.

He seems like anything but a great man to me, though I've not really heard of him.
Dood. Tony Stewart is the famous golf guy who got killed when his plane had explosive decompression after takeoff. Horrible tragedy. Wonderful person. It was a few years ago but I'd expect you to know about it.

Why would anyone open this thread (at it's onset) if they didn't know who Tony Stewart was??

So he could show how superior he is to the unwashed southerners.

I feel ashamed that I have watched that video many times to the point where it no longer depicts a young man's death rather has turned into a curious real life CSI experiment, along the lines of Travon Martin/George Zimmerman. In fact, it becomes more important to prove some portion of the fools on the internet wrong than remembering this as a tragedy for many many people.

One of my cousins married into a "3rd generation racing family" that been racing there probably 60+ years. Though I've been by Bowman Grey hundreds of times, I've never been inside. I think it started out as a dirt track after WWII, but I'm not sure. Anyways, I only see Jason a couple of times each year at large (60-70 people) family Thanksgiving/Christmas dinners, and have only mentioned his racing once...after I'd seen him and his older brother (Bert) on a late night BG TV race a few weeks before. I just mentioned that it must be a "blast" and he agreed. At these events I'm more preoccupied with his cute little girls (they're growing up though) as is he, as they're playing with the youngins like my grandnieces. Simply the nicest fellow you could ever meet imo, and he's the anti-thesis to some of the stereotypes presented on this thread. Though he's certainly no millionaire like TS, he makes a decent "living" supporting his wife and kids doing what he loves, "racing"...it's in his "blood" so to speak...doing what his dad and grandfather did before him. Jason is pretty competitive I do believe as they occasionally mention him winning on TV (and his brother is even more so), in the "top" division there. Different strokes folks....

Keith...this guy I cited was the exception rather than the norm. I liked going to the local track....it was 15 minutes from my house. I'd decide at dinner time if I wanted to go or not. Take my son and pick a fantasy field on the fly. Most people were well behaved saw a couple of fistfights in the pits over bonehead maneuvers. Never saw what was depicted in the video nor at the sprint car race.

I'm amazed that so many people can see something other than what is clearly depicted on the video. ALL cars on the track were decelerating due to the yellow, and TS CLEARLY stabbed the throttle to toss the car towards Ward, and it went further than he planned. End of story. The only debate is whether he will be charged. He surely will be sued.

The engine you hear on the video cannot be TS car. The video was shot from the grandstand and I sorta doubt there was a remote mic on the car. The engine noise came from a car on the front straight.

^ Yup. Even a shotgun mic on a dedicated HD video cam would not get that kind of audio across the track.

Physics question, stab the throttle, which way will the car go with two unequal radius wheels locked to spin at the same RPM?

Every drivers meeting goes over salient points.
"Don't leave your car,unless it's on fire."
Safety workers will advise you.
Pundits on TV aren't mentioning one of the basic rules of driving on the track.
I know other posters have stated the same, but then tangents of speculation.
Don't get out of your car!

Actually another driver borrowed a set of AC Delco 6k4g sparkplugs just before the race. You heard the other car.

But when that sound is reflected off a chain link fence, the Doppler effect changes the pitch. I used a Rockwell sprint car sound analyzer to confirm it, damn it!!
