Oh boy I screwed up big time............

At the end of 2009 I canceled the insurance on the Corvair because it was in the shop with me building a new motor for it. When the registration expired I got a note from the DMV saying I couldn't renew the registration till I provided Proof of Insurance. I got busy with business, life, other cars and let the Corvair fall into the shadows. Fast forward to 2013. The motor is in the car and ready to hit the road.
I knew I had screwed up back in 09 for not filing a non op with the DMV and figured I'd have some penalties to pay for it. I figured a couple hundred.......boy was I wrong!! $728.33!!!. It'll be cheaper to drive it to Washington and register it up there.
Sorry Cali, I know you need the money but $728.33 is too much. Hello Seattle..........

No, the State of California screwed up again by trying to squeeze an unreasonable amount out of one of it's citizens who happens to have a plan B. Congrats.

I think I could handle a vacation in Oregon. Are you anywhere near Paul?

Be sure to post some pics of it when you can. Have you joined the Corvair Forum yet?

One of our local PCA members had a longhood 911S that needed an engine rebuild. A whole lot of while I am in there evolved into a complete restoration and engine modifications. It took several years and he did not keep the registration current. When he went to get a new tag they wanted a large penalty. Fortunately they mentioned if he could produce receipts to prove he had spent a large amount on repairs they would waive the late fees. He showed the receipts and the lady behind the counter yelled "lordy lordy lordy, that is more than my house is worth." They gave him the exemption.

We called that car the light switch. It was a very light car with instant power to red line.

Sorry to hear about your issue, seems ridiculous.

I'll hijack for a minute. I'm thinking about getting my dad a Corvair, he's liked them when they were new and he was in high school. I'd appreciate any links or info about the later Covairs.

Thanks

Pics are needed. A well built Corvair is a pretty cool car.

I'm actually going in today to register my Mustang to insure I don't get caught in that trap. I'll be lucky to have it driving again by summer at the rate I'm going, right now it's just sitting in storage. If I register without tagging it I should be covered, and KS allows one-time registration on antique cars (as opposed to yearly renewals).

How on earth could you have thought that 4 years of registration with back penalties in CA. would be "a couple hundred"?? You've been here a while.

Why is there a penalty for having your car off the road?

You should be getting Carbon Credits for it!

Dude, it's not DMV's fault you didn't either non-op your car or keep the registration current.

Expect the State of CA to go after you for the money. I went through something similar after I left. They seized money right out of my bank account, put in a judgement with the Franchise Tax Board for collection of the balance and a few other nasty things - all for a car that hadn't been in the state for almost two years and registered elsewhere - all over around 200 bucks. I eventually got it straightened out but not without a lot of phone calls, BS runarounds and buck-passing on the part of the bureaucracy. If I'd been able to bill my standard rate for the time I spent on that nonsense, they'd have ended up oweing me around $1,500.

You might be able to get away with a 500, but I recommend the 1000-count bottle of Excedrin. Stock up now.

In the meantime do what I did - enjoy the car registered and legal in its new state, and take satisfaction in the fact that it'll end up costing the State of CA more in chasing you than they'll ever get - or even more than they would have gotten if they did prevail, which they probably won't (they didn't in my case, I had to prove repeatedly that the car had left the state, etc.)

CA is short for "ConfiscAtory" now. It really is. Glad I left. I'm not going back until things change dramatically there, which is to say probably never. It just keeps getting worse and will continue to do so for the indefinite future from what I can tell.

When I moved from VA to AZ, I didn't do anything about my registration, just let it lapse. When you do that, DMV sends a letter to your insurance company. But since I had already registered in AZ, my insurance co. knew about it and all was fine. Why should you get fined for not renewing a registration? Seems to me the fine should come if they catch you driving on a public road with a lapsed registration.

You are mentally ill. You know that, right? The word "California" comes up and you go crazy woman. I've let the registration lapse on about oh, maybe a thousand cars out here and nothing has ever happened to me or my bank accounts. Nothing.

A car, not used or driven on public streets for four years, and the state is entitled to $728.33?!?!? And some of you are ok with this?

Please explain why the state should be entitled to this money.

Maybe they assume the driver got away with four years of free driving? I had a vehicle non op. I think I paid $25 which last forever.

I can start another thread about idiots driving unregistered and uninsured and generate the opposite response.
