Arrow What about carrying a taser vs. gun around?

Seems like one could come in handy - should a situation become dicey.

Anyone here with input on practicality of purchasing and deploying, if needed?

Florida laws treat taser guns as pistols..... The charge/taser packs are serial numbered also and traceable, a good friends wife carries one, she was required to get her concealed permit.
Imo they are more bulky...... And non lethal. ...... Id prefer the sure thing for my wife......I.e. bullets. ..

They also may not be effective against an attacker wearing bulky clothing like a coat.

A person strung out on crack or meth or similar would probably not be stopped or even slowed by a taser. Remember those Moro tribesmen in the PI, a bunch of shot from 38 revolvers would not stop them.......

Any self defense weapon has to stop the bad person(s) and the user has to be mentally ready to use it!

Financially ready as well, because you're going to be lawyered up for years to come in order to stay out of prison.

For people who get into a lot of conflicts a non leathal option is good. IE cops. For the rest of us if nonlethal is good then you can probably get out of needing anything. Carry a pistol in an appropriate caliber and be ready to use it or dont carry anything at all.

IMO the odds of your attacker being on drugs is very high. Lots of videos of law having to taser someone like that more than once, or even twice, to gain control.

Neither the wife or I carry - just feel the odds of needing a piece are too small to warrant the hassle. Plus in Cali we can't get a CCW anyway. FWIW.

Taser needs to be aimed, you only get one try, and it may not work (clothing, etc).

I see it as a useful tool when police officers have a suspect cornered, have guns on him, and are simply looking for a safer way to subdue the person, without a lot of contact. It's the electronic nightstick.

You're never going to be in that situation.

Thanks for all the replies and input everyone.

Going to re-think.

I don't usually find myself in dicey situations but would rather be proactive than reactive just in case.

Will post again when I figure it out.

Cali ccw permits are issued by county sheriffs. From what I understand, some will issue to all, some will issue to a few (ie, their buds and election contributers) and some won't issue at all - it all depends on exactly where in Cali you are.

That said, I'm in Florida and we've had shall-issue for longer than I've been legally able to buy a gun. I don't have a CCW - up until recently it wouldn't have done me any good other than skipping the 3 day wait for handgun purchase from a FFL (I work at a college and until a recent lawsuit I couldn't even leave it in my car on campus). And to be honest, the few times I've felt the need to carry (ie, checking on a friend's wife after hurricanes) I've carried anyway or at least had something accessible (ie, take pistol w/ me when staying in hotels in Jax, Orlando, Daytona, etc)

What are you gonna do if you miss with your only shot? And what are you gonna do if you make a direct hit? Run away? Hold the juice on him for a while? Then what? Got a partner or handcuffs nearby? I think it'd be nuts for any non-LEO to carry one. I watched two volunteers get tased recently. They went down like a sack of dirt, but were expecting the shot, were hit point blank from about 5' away and were wearing t-shirts.

IMO a single shot of any device is not enough...You might find that the person you Tased has several buddies.

I can't believe anyone would even consider this an option. Why not just keep an old school marm with you that could give the bad guys a severe scolding...

Not much of a concern if you just let them kill you and your family I suppose. Personally I'll take my chances, as well as live in a state with laws that allow citizens to still depend themselves.

Carry a can of hornet and wasp killer. After a squirt of that they at least no longer can see you.

Actually, if you live in a sane place that has stand your ground or castle doctrine laws, if you defend yourself from a relevant threat then you are probably fine. That doesn't protect you from civil suit on behalf of the "victim".

This may get you into a whole bunch of trouble - plus it is a bit difficult to carry concealed.
I'd say learn the local laws and figure out what you can/can't carry.
