Ralph the wonder Llama. LOL

Would love to know their labor hours on the project.

I would estimate at least 5,000 given the one video they made (~25 minute cut) of fabricating some brackets was well over 7 hours. The CNC work they video is sped up 5-10x usually.

Awesome project nonetheless.

Side question - has anyone invited them to Pelican?

oldE 01-02-2019 10:20 AM

When the heck would they have time?

Best
Les

sammyg2 01-02-2019 11:58 AM

LOL, I could just see it.
They'd log on and at hi, someone would mention a bracket they made and there would be 25 pages of how many better ways there is to do it and why it was the wrong color :)

herr_oberst 02-01-2019 05:05 PM

There's a new one on YouTube, Episode 22

dan79brooklyn 02-02-2019 03:35 AM

Nice one! Loved the shout-out to Moog on MCM.
‘Not looking for a sex-spec stereo’

porsche4life 02-02-2019 09:48 AM

As usual, an obscene amount of effort for what they get. That stereo setup is cool though! Alpine should sell that... would be great in lots of old cars.

Geronimo '74 03-03-2019 12:48 AM

23 is up!

dan79brooklyn 03-03-2019 01:26 AM

Nice one! Seems like they’re getting close to firing up the engine...maybe next year haha.

sc_rufctr 03-03-2019 04:12 AM

Just watched the latest. Good as always.

Anyone want to comment on this? I'm just not OK with all plastic brake lines.
Would you do it on a 911? :(

Great episode but are we OK with flexible brake lines?

I would have gone with hard lines on the body.

For all the amazing fabrication skills they demonstrate...
I'm feeling a bit let down by some of the finishing touches.

The radio head unit, jeez what an understatement that was
I get the feel that for all the effort they have been doing, they'll end up with technically very high end mini, that looks like a very much boring old mini.

:(:(

I'm old enough to deeply appreciate a well done Q-ship!

They look like Polyarmour Steel lines to me. They are original equipment now I am told and were used to replace the lines on my 12 year old C280.

I think i might need to clarify

Surely you have to agree that this radio :

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1551639328.jpg

looks like crap.

I presume they'll have that fake wood veneer done up with something newer.
But that radio and the integration of that radio isn't exactly "fancy".

nor are those generic car buttons.

Exterior wise, bit similar, it's not like they are making any changes to the overal Mini look.
With their fabrication skills they could have done something like turning the panel seams flush (better Aero , cleaner look).
Get a more modern front windshield, glued in, again flush, slightly bigger, like 944 type 1 to type 2 change.

Let's face it, they have the skills to build something that could come out of Chip Foose's shop, or any other shop.
but it's clearly not built by some kind of vision that has any focus on "looks"..

Alan A 03-03-2019 02:14 PM

It’s a Q ship.
Which is my favorite kind of car.

I want to see how it’s finished before commenting on the looks.

Can you elaborate? I don't think I've heard that phrasing before. I'm more amazed at their engineering skills to solve all the problems... they create for themselves. This is the level of detail and passion you don't see with common-day custom-build shows on TV. Mostly because they need to fit in a 42 minute time slot after editing.

Alan A 03-03-2019 06:56 PM

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-ship

Looks innocuous on the surface. Bad ass underneath.
Q ship.

That's PERFECT!

It's cool to have something extraordinary that looks ordinary.

It's an old british maritime expression. Here's the wiki; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-ship

Hot rodders started using the term decades ago to describe a sleeper. A wolf in sheeps clothing. More than meets the eye.

svandamme 03-03-2019 08:10 PM

never heard of that term with cars.... sleeper ok, that I think everybody knows.

bkreigsr 03-04-2019 05:17 AM

FWIW, the theme music was lifted from the Naked Gun series.
SHO ran the movie, and sequels, last week and voila .

cairns 03-04-2019 06:00 AM

Agreed it's Q ship perfection. Hope they paint it BRG.

Adrian Thompson 03-06-2019 05:29 AM

I think it fails the Q ship test with those massive fender flares to cover the wider track.

Having said that. It's an awesome project in every way. So what if they have 'regular' car buttons and a plain stereo. It's a drivers car first and foremost. It doesn't need machined from billet depleted uranium switch gear plated with platinum and a dash covered in whale penis leather. It needs to work, be reliable and go like hell!!!

javadog 03-06-2019 05:34 AM

It’s a very entertaining series on YouTube, I can’t say I’d want the finished product in my driveway though.

that's my point, all that work
for something that has an interior and dash that quite frankly makes me wanna cry.

I could never own a car that has such a fugly radio in it.

Adrian Thompson 03-06-2019 06:01 AM

I don't think most people 'get' the point of this car, or Mini's in general outside the UK. Mini's, especially in the UK, are still massively popular. They transcend perceived brand/wealth/status, plus their rich motorsport history. I defy you to find someone of 40 or older in the UK who didn't own one, have a friend or family member who owned one. This isn't trying to be a sports car, it's appeal is it's capability for footprint. It's not meant to be a Boxster or even an Elise, it's from a land where hot hatches are better point to point machines than most sports cars. Tight, tiny, twisting roads with not the best finish, grass, leaves, mud, cow and horse ****. It's a mini rally refuge.

It's got A/C. I'd let it eat crackers in my driveway, and I'd definitely use it to commute. I don't think the missus would want to ride in it much, but that's OK.

my point has nothing todo with exterior looks
or it's performance

it has everything to do with sitting in it as a driver and what i see from that position : an bloody ugly dash.

The roads you mention are similar to the roads in flanders
I blaze through em with my cayman or my 120D... TC off, total blast.

There's nothing that mini will do that i don't do with mine... but i wont be stuck with a an ugly dash like that... I really hate ugly dashes.
Hence why most Ferrari's or Alfa's do it for me.. just awful dashes..5 year old boy racer aka italian design

sammyg2 03-06-2019 07:39 AM

I enjoy watching the videos and the fabrication, but can't help but think there's an electrical fire in it's future.

Geronimo '74 03-28-2019 08:40 AM

The end is near.
Future plans revealed.

Great as always but I really don't like those step drills they keep using. I have tried them but I prefer old school twist drills.

svandamme 05-12-2019 12:24 PM

I would think if you have to have a lot of holes made of variying bigger diameters.

that step drill is a massive time saver...

javadog 05-12-2019 12:48 PM

Step drills work better in thin sheet metal, which is why they use them. They are also better for large diameter holes.

otto_kretschmer 05-12-2019 06:28 PM

in episode 7 around 7 1/2 minutes he said he wanted to run AC too

:)

I thought that was good for a laugh

I havn't gotten there but I'm expecting him to fit the radiator in the back somewhere

otto_kretschmer 05-13-2019 06:24 PM

episode 15

I don't understand why they want power steering on a mini

from all the radiators up front and wide tires they will fit..
probably a bit nose heavy

Also

Gives em reason to make more brackets.
BRACKETS.
