Brad Marchand Can't Help Himself.
Even though he wasn't penalized on the play, I would wager there is a suspension around the corner for this knucklehead....

If only he could restrain himself. It appears he can't. He must be a complete idiot.
He even changed the way he wants his name pronounced. Twice.

No kidding. The league can't have things like this happen and not lay down the law when the guy has attempted to injure so many players.
I am actually surprised that he can still walk let alone skate!

Two game suspension and a $43000. fine.
The NHL player safety committee needs to grow a pair and suspend guys like this piece of crap. The fine is less than 1% of his annual salary. What a joke.

I'm not a hockey fan, so I have to ask - what is a "slew foot"? Looks like some underhanded way to scoop his feet out from under him.

When two players are approaching the boards and the trailing player sweeps the legs from under his opponent. Watch the video and see how the opponent has no ability to defend himself in that situation.

So, couldn't they (the NHL) put an end to these kind of cheap shots through real penalties and administrative action? Suspend the guy for the rest of the year - something meaningful - and suspend him for life the first time he does it again upon his return. Get the word out at that level and the problem goes away. Unless, of course, hockey is so desperate for fans that they do not wan the problem to go away... No other pro sport allows fighting at this level (except maybe NASCAR) unless it's a fighting sport, like MMA (I wonder how their fans would like it if they pulled their gloves off to play hockey every now and then...).

What I find to be very 'weak-a$$ed' about the fine & suspension was the league's apparent rationale (some broadcaster's included) that Brassard was unhurt & continued to play after the incident. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out the potential danger of the 'slew foot' which is just a flat-out dirty play. Serious injury to an ankle, tibia, fibula, or worse, a femoral fracture, could've just as easily been the end result of that particularly reckless move. The player on the receiving end is pretty much totally defenseless, especially at those speeds & that close to the boards.
Career ending injuries can & do happen in the course of play in just about any fast paced sport - ultra cheap shots like the 'slew foot' shouldn't be part of any game. The league has to send a stronger message & come down hard on this sort of behaviour to effectively take it out of the game. The weakness of this decision is even more confounding as the player in question is a repeat offender. Cheers JB

You all are just jealous he doesn't play on your team...
Yeah it was a bad play and he deserved the suspension. As far as the suspension is concerned, it was probably two games because there was no call on the ice, no injury. I find it laughable that no one complains about Matt Cooke (who ended Marc Savard's career with a far dirtier hit), Pat Verbeck (the original Little Ball of Hate), Terrible Ted (if you don't know who he is you don't know hockey), Sean Avery (who had hoof and mouth disease), Jordan Tootoo, Theo Fleury Mark Messier, Claude Lemieux... That said, you can't find too many people who played the agitator so well yet still has as many points each year. . He knows what he is doing and he's paid very very well to be the jerk who gets under your skin. You are thinking about how to get even for the last period while he is scoring a goal. Currently 12 goals, 24 pts, +11 42 GP ![]() (and I gave this thread 5 stars for the opportunity to say I admire his skills)

To a certain extent no one wants the problem 'gone', the NHL is, and always has been a very violent game.

No one is picking on Marchand, it was dirty play. If Matt Cook or Tootoo did the same thing they'd be crucified here in a similar manner. The hit on Savard resulted in a rule change. Similar hits no result in five game suspensions now. And Matt Cooke has reformed his game to suit the new NHL.

The new and improved Matt Cooke:
February 9, 2011, Cooke was given a four-game suspension for a hit from behind on Columbus Blue Jackets' defenseman Fedor Tyutin.[21] March 21, Cooke was suspended for the final ten games of the Penguins regular season schedule as well as the first round of the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs stemming from an elbow to the head of New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh. February 2013, Cooke was involved in an incident with against the Ottawa Senators in which Erik Karlsson's achilles tendon was cut by Cooke's skate as the two made contact along the boards. While Senators owner Eugene Melnyk was outraged by the incident, stating "To have him (Karlsson) taken out by a goon is unconscionable", league officials determined there would be no supplemental discipline for Cooke. April 21, 2014, during game 3 of the first round finals against the Colorado Avalanche, Cooke delivered a knee-on-knee check to Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie. Barrie did not return to the game and it was announced that he would miss 4–6 weeks as a result of the Cooke check. After an in-person hearing with the Department of Player Safety, Cooke was suspended for 7 games.

There are henchmen and there are agitators.
Georges Laraque, Donald Brashear, Derek Boogaard, Marty McSorley were henchmen. Their only job was to go out there a take you out of the game.

Video: Daniel Carcillo offered in-person hearing for cross check on Jets’ Perreault | ProHockeyTalk Same night as the Marchand infraction but only crickets about it. Marchand is the guy everyone loves to hate but Carcillo and Cooke (even since his supposed reformation) have far worse records.

That little cross check is legal in lacrosse!
![]() I wouldn't be so tough on Marschand if he wasn't a repeat offender. With his history I would have expected that he would be sitting for 6 to 10 games. He must be the kind of guy you need to hit in the wallet for him to understand what he needs to do different.

Billy: Carcillo has a far worse record than Marchand but no one is screaming about Carcillo. Why is that?
I propose because people like to hate him. He once said that they don't "boo" nobodys. Let the haters hate.

Huh. Still nothing but the sound of crickets about Carcillo.
Ask me again why I think people are biased about Marchand when they turn a blind eye to far worse offenders.

Back from an enjoyable day in the mountains. Little guy had his ski lessons...
For me, I follow Boston a bit because my in-laws live just outside of Boston and so I have seen some of Marschands more classic moments. Carcillo flies under the radar for me simply because the Flames don't face him often. I did a youtube search on him and he is certainly no alter boy but the hits for him on youtube are outnumbered by Marschands by a large amount. I wouldn't want a player like Marchand on any team I am cheering for. Not trying to be an a$%hole here (it comes natural to me! ![]() His chicken ***** actions always seem to occur when the opposing player is most vulnerable to serious and perhaps career ending injury. Watch the video again and try to justify your argument that because there are worse guys out there what he does must be ok. Essentially you are condoning his behavior. Watched an AHL game when I was out at Christmas time with Providence and Manchester squaring up. No fights! It was a pretty good game and the Monarchs arena was pretty full. Good loud crowd and lots of the opposing teams fans in the stands.
