40 yrs of SNL last night
All the material they have on file and they couldn't come up with anything better for 3 1/2 hours? I know the commercials had to take up an hour of it. All the musical guests were very weak with the exception of Paul Simon at the end. Eddy Murphy didn't do anything. Chevy looked drugged. Jerry's bit was lame.
Needless to say I was underwhelmed. I did like Wayne and Garth's bit.

Last week on VH1 Classics they were showing old (pre-'80) SNL shows.
These were ones with this cast.....IMHO they were the best...... ![]() Plus Bill Murray was in them.....

I think there was maybe 45 to 60 minutes of worthwhile stuff in the entire 3.5 hours.
Lots of little bits were fun to see - for example, the "what about singers named Paul?" (as hosts) during the intro, Keith Richards introducing Sir Paul, and Sarah Palin (being initially mistaken for Tina Fey) asking "how much would Lorne pay me to run again? What if I chose Donald Trump as my running mate?". It was fun to see Jane Curtain, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler together on Weekend Update. (I'm hoping Amy Poeher gets the Daily Show when Jon Stewart leaves later this year, but that won't happen.) Yes, Chevy Chase struck me as probably being able to do a good Dick Cheney impression these days, and he did look hammered. Dan Ackroyd did the "Bass-o-matic" bit, but why? Garrett Morris should have been given a chance to do more, and I REALLY wanted to see Eddie Murphy do Mr. Robinson's neighborhood one more time, but I got the impression that Mr. Murphy thought the whole thing was beneath him. It would have also been nice to acknowledge some of the big names fired from the cast over the years and what happened to them - Robert Downey Jr., Julia Louis-Dreyful, Joan Cusack, Anthony Michael Hall, Damon Wayans, etc. Last edited by dw1; 02-17-2015 at 10:40 AM.. |

Chevy gonna drop, from what I can tell.
Percocets. Probably from all the pratfalling. Some of that had to hurt. Too bad. He was quite the force in his day. He got my teamster buddy into a major ****-load of trouble. Disney. Man of the House. Jack didn't look as bad as I thought he might. Some of the guys have been hitting the feed bag a bit often. |

I would have been happy and laughed more if they just replayed the original skits.
Loved Rosanne Roseanadanna, the original Gilda that is. She was a very funny lady. |

SNL has been funny at times, but for it be labeled as some type of cultural touchstone is lame. It has served as a launch pad for some great comedic talent, but doesn't deserve the praise constantly heaped upon it. Its glory years are in the looong rearview at this stage.

One of the best things my wife and I did was to ditch cable and get a roku player.
On it are several different channels, one, with all SNL episodes from 1 thru up to (almost) present day. Really fun watching the decades go by, until the recent ones where it all gets skiddish. Watching last night I could appreciate most of the old snippets because I had seen them all recently. I thought it interesting how there weren't many new skits- and that the ones we grew up on were still the best. |

The past 10 years have been pathetic. Will occasionally check it out only to be disgusted with the lack of talent and imagination and turn it off. Watched some of the special, but only made it half way give or take. Ed Grimley, The Ladies Man, Coffee Talk, etc., were classics...would have been happy to watch reruns like on Roku.

So much great material........takes real talent to eff it up that bad. My wife and I were looking forward to some new funny stuff along with a lot of classic old clips. Instead it was 3.5 hours of Hollywood ass kissing. Chris Rock brown noses Eddie Murphy for a good five minutes, Eddie comes out and says thanks, then they cut to commercial. WTF? There's a reason why I don't watch Hollywood award shows, it's because they look like this show did. Huge disappointment.

Phil Hartman was a really good guy. Helped out a few underprivileged friends of mine.
