Should a tram be built in the Grand Canyon?
Have you heard of the Escalade project? I think the Grand Canyon should be left alone. The proposed tourist development, and especially a tram, will be a blight on the land, as far as I'm concerned. I'm no liberal, but I do love pristine, untrammeled wilderness.

Nooooo! If the Indians build anything, it should be a casino.

I think visitors should each be issued a drone, so they can capture that ultimate family photo....

What?!?!

Please, no tram. I've only hiked it once ( so far ) and it was outstanding, for sure.
Adding a tram seems to be counter-intuitive to what the Canyon is all about. If folks can't hike or ride mules, tough.

No tram for me, but look at Skywalk. I think its pretty while I pee in my pants when I was on there, but what a rip off by the Indians. I don't think they should have built that, and left the place natural but its done now, so what can we do?

they wanted to do that to Glacier Point also sometime ago. That would really ruin Yosemite.

I don't agree with it, but I think there will still be plenty of places to get the remote Grand Canyon experience. Look at Supai falls, even by helicopter you still have an almost 3 mile hike to get there!
Beautiful place btw, if you ever get a chance, Go! |

Now in 993 land ...
|
I'm all for leaving things natural, but flip side of the coin is that the Indians own the land and should be able to build what they want. I sure would want to, if I lived in the middle of nowhere and had no resources but tourism.
Go to the European Alps. Every mountain is developed with a lift and a restaurant up top. Or a mountain pass road. It has a different quality to it. People still hike the same mountain, even if they meet ladies in high heels in the cafe up top who took the lift. It still counts. People still rock climb the northwest face of Half Dome, meeting the day hikers that come up the cables from the opposite side ... there are more examples ... keep an open mind! G |

We can't build an oil pipeline through flyover country, but it's ok to build a tram and mini-mall at the Grand Canyon? YGBSM.

Why stop there? Let's just run one up to the summit of Mount Everest too.

No tram, please. If memory serves, one was proposed, also, for Yosemite Valley a number of years back. Fortunately that plan did not come to fruition.

Meh, as long as it doesn't take a dime of taxpayer money (beyond what the tribe already gets from BIA), I don't care. That's a very remote area where people are not likely to really flood the place. And if it draws the crowds away from the regular South Rim park, so much the better. The Skywalk is also far removed from civilization. If they can find developers who are willing to put up the money and risk not getting paid, as evidenced by the gigantic lawsuit going on with the Skywalk developer, let them do it. As long as I'm not paying for it, that's fine.

For the NYT article there is this link: Grand Canyon Escalade
Pretty interesting perspective. A long time ago I rowed baggage boats on two trips down the Colorado, each 12 day trip. I also spent a lot of time where Renae Yellowhorse was standing in the NYT article. First of all, the protected lands around the Grand Canyon are immense in scale, almost three hundred miles in total length. So, while my preference is to continue to restrict development, take a look at the link above.
