Ingredients from China?

No blue Bell anywhere right now, I guess.
In Australia we have had a few scares too.
In spite of the Advertising/Marketing 'handcrafted' fables, the contamination is usually traced back to the manufacturer &/or supplier using cheaper ingredients that originate in China.

In Australia's case the chinese product is normally slipped into here via New Zealand.
New Zealand has a clean/green reputation, but they have lax import rules with China.

My prediction is that the source of the contamination will be imported ingredients. With all the 'FreeTrade Agreements' no ordinary person has a clue where stuff comes from.

We have a local chain of dairy and ice cream stores calls Braum's.

The are fanatics on controlling their products. The grow their own alfalfa and grass to feed their own herd of cattle to make their own milk and ice cream.

The only recalls I remember from them was some of the ice cream that had one of the Braum’s suppliers, Pecan Deluxe Candy Co., reportedly bought peanut products from Peanut Corp. of America, which has been targeted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a possible source for a salmonella outbreak.

it was sublime.

HD went to 14 oz "pints" and started injecting air into there ice cream. I only buy them when on sale for $2.99. I talked with the director of marketing 2 years ago and she said it was necessary to maintain the quality.

+1

Graeter's is truly excellent ice cream and well worth the price and shipping cost. Or when getting some from a very gracious friend.

I'll have to look into Jeni's, a high end local cheese shop sells it.
All ice cream has air in it and by law it has to weigh 4.5 pounds per gallon. custard is slightly more and has more solids in it.

Frozen custard is much better than regular ice cream and is the style we make when we make home made ice cream.

OK, they started injecting more air into it. I don't associate HD with complying to the minimum standard necessary to be called ice cream.

There are plenty of other brands for that.

this. really the gold standard for me.

i've quit eating vanilla malt shakes because of having one at Salt/Straw. it's difficult to "go back".

i'll reserve it for my occasional trip to portland.

I completely did away with ice cream after buying an ice cream maker and reading the recipe. Straight up cream and sugar. I guess it is called iceCREAM for a reason! I like to sin, but I am more of a salty food person. Second helping off steak and skip desert kind of guy ...

Didn't Jeni just have a listeria-related recall?

Yes. All of the local stores are closed here and products are off the shelves.
