OMG Food Poisoning
OMG. I'm here to report that I am still alive.
At 8 pm last night I made myself dinner. Kimchee from a jar, raw salmon, fried salmon skin, fried tofu, homemade sauce (soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, scallions, etc), sticky rice. Nothing I haven't eaten before, except the kimchee - that's actually something I've not eaten before, in any quantity. After finishing, I quickly started feeling bad. Nauseous, stomach ache. I went to the bathroom and threw up. Only a little. I felt a little better, and around 10 pm I went for a 5 minute bike ride to test a new bike camera at night. Upon returning home, I vomited, a lot, in the side yard. Tottered inside. Abdomen was bloated and really painful. Tried to go to bed but kept getting up and heading for the toilet. Spent the next two hours alternately in a fetal position on the bathroom floor, throwing up, and producing, um, liquid bowel movements. Weak, profuse cold sweating, and also felt like I was breaking out in hives all over my body. Around 1 am the pain and other stuff subsided and I went to sleep. Briefly. At 4 am I awoke with more abdominal pain, a different sort of gnawing pain. I tried to stay in bed because I was weak and dizzy. Around 6 am I got up, took an omeprazole, and ate something bland. Then back to bed. That was the first time in many, many years that I've had a bad food reaction. Normally I can eat anything, including raw fish by the pound. But I think the kimchee did me in, or maybe the combination of kinchee and raw fish. There is some of the kimchee and the raw fish left in the refrigerator. Maybe I should eat one or the other, to determine if my illness was caused by the kimchee or the fish? What do you think?

what?!!
no! toss everything. EDIT: you can still eat it? i have had food poisoning twice. i still cannot eat a BLT. it is ruined for life. nothing tasted bad? no crazy out-gassing when you opened up the jar of kimchee? hope you feel better soon. hydrate..and on the bright side: might be a good time to bump that weight loss thread..you're probably very light now. haha.

I'm with Vash. I'm surprised you can even type the food names, let alone eat them again.
IOW, hurling is your body's way of saying WTF were you thinking? glad you pulled thru.

Bummer, hope you are feeling better.
Kimchee is fermented to begin with, so I've never had any problems myself. Unless the jar was 'well' beyond the expiration date, or left unrefrigerated after opening, I wouldn't think it would be the cause.... How 'fresh' was the salmon?? In any case - throw everything out!!

What do you think?[/QUOTE Sorry about your food poisoning but you may get sick again(do you want to risk that?) if you try the fish and kimchee again. Throw it all out and anything else that you think is off and you may have tried(or not). My daughter got salmonella poisoning recently and thinks that it may have come from a sandwich being in her purse too long. I suggested going through her fridge and getting rid of anything that was old or outdated. |

The salmon was fresh, from whole foods ($19/lb!), looked great, no odor at all.
But that doesn't mean it wasn't cross contaminated, maybe the guys handled poultry then the salmon. The kimchee seemed normal, no outgas, but I've not had prior experience with the stuff. Sarah (the young lady who lives with us) had the same meal, but she poached her salmon, and wasnt ill. So that points at the salmon. Depressing, I've always prided myself on having a cast iron Chinese gut. In Baja or Indonesia, I'd eat street ceviche or nasi goreng with flies buzzing around it. Guess I'm getting old and weak. Time to live on Enfamil.

I love sushi, but won't eat it anymore. Bacteria and viruses abound that can only be killed by cooking. Did that raw fish come from the Los Angeles Harbor...I'll pass...
One of my triplet sisters had her lower intestine rupture due to food poisoning from Sushi, it almost killed her. Six months in the hospital and 10 years later she is still effed up. Lost most of her colon. Last edited by Hugh R; 06-23-2015 at 03:10 PM.. |

I have a mental note from eating at the Chinese buffet that says "do not eat fish and melon too close together".
I agree, it must have been contaminated salmon. Not all raw salmon can or should be eaten as sushi. |

Most people assume that the salmon nigiri or sashimi they are being served in a sushi restaurant is fresh and has not been frozen. Colorado, and I am sure most other states, require salmon to be frozen at -10 for 7 days to kill bacteria before being served raw. Eating fish raw without knowing the source and following safe handling guidelines is a bad idea. It is unfortunate JYL learned this the hard way. Most people just assume if a sushi restaurant cuts up raw fish there is no reason they can't do the same. My chefs (sushi restaurant), go to great lengths to ensure the safety of those eating what they serve and have trained extensively in how to handle raw fish.

Dedbird, the fish are flash frozen on the boat, no? Good post though. Very good point. And trained chefs should know how to spot parasites I would think.

Yep, that sums it up. But I get the concept of "maybe I should try one at a time to see what made me sick" - I've considered that before. But best to just avoid what's in your fridge and buy fresh to try that experiment.

jyl- What a graphic described ordeal. Can't believe your able to share. Could have gone far more serious and raw fish is not a good idea. You really don't know where its from and even so, who's handled it. This will gross you out, but its so crazy about food handlers and hygiene. Butt wipe at the toilet or urine splash and they still don't always wash their hands. NOT POSSIBLE for 100% around the clock inspection. Without getting hammered for a race comment, but I've seen first hand - more than once, food worker exit a washroom without cleaning hands.
Talking of iron stomach's, always thought the same. One time in Acapulco with some friends, was hesitant to eat some cooked sausage from a sidewalk vendor. Smelled great, looked good, and I did have lots of teq. and Corona's in me. Changed my mind and we all ordered up. They all got puking sick within an hour, except for me. Don't know for sure but thought maybe all the drinks took care of the matter. Is this possible? But.... once ate a 'Big Breakfast' with sausage at a McDonalds. Within 15 minutes I was puking and had a major blow out the azz. Lasted for over 12 hours and all I had for the next 12 was water. I HATE McDONALDS!
