Tejas Critters...

Internet discovers terrifying giant centipede in Texas - UPI.com

I've seen some big centipedes but this one is a whopper! Would pack one heck of a bite too. I didn't take the photo - taken in Austin.

Today I must have sucked up over a dozen black widow spiders in my garage. The shop vac works best on tight spots I would take a torch to. Haven't found many chemicals that work well enough either.

After that little slice of heaven, I cut the lawn. What lawn care project wouldn't be complete without a few fire ant bites. I'm so used to them now they barely phase me.

And of course a wasp the size of a humming bird had to inspect my hat. I'm not afraid of wasps or bees so I just let him nose around and be on his merry way.

After the work I decided to take a dip in the pool. Upon cleaning out my skimmer there were several wolf spiders with bodies about the size of quarters in the basket. I hate sticking my hands in that think.

Tonight I see the dogs curious over something crawling on the hardwood floor...another spider. Looked to be a large wolf spider again - holding its ground until my daughters chiweeni decided it was too good not to eat. That dog has been known to eat mice, rats, fence lizards, geekos...and she made quick work of that spider.

Gotta love Tejas!

We found one about 2/3 that size just a few steps from our back door wen we lived in San Antonio. Have fun walking around barefoot.

By the way, they run fast too!

Thank you for reminding me why the cost of living is so high here in SoCal. [cold shiver]

I found one like that about 5 to 6 inches long a few years ago on our front entry. First time I'd ever seen one like that around here. Haven't seen one like that since. Otherwise they are only an inch to inch & a half long. The scorpions here are only about three quarters of an inch. Our spiders are usually pretty small, except for some of the Black Widows. I don't bother wolf spiders unless they are in the house, but I really hate Black Widows & kill them every chance I get. I use an insect trap inside the house that I place under a couple of 4 watt night lights in a couple of places in the house. They are black plastic trays from H.D. with a layer of sticky stuff in the bottom of the tray. Flying insects that happen to get in are attracted to the lights at night and fall into the traps. If there are spiders around, they sometimes get stuck trying to get the other bugs in the trap. I don't think the traps would hold a centipede that size tho.

That is a monster!

We used to go camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains when I was a young lad.....I'll never forget coming face to face with my first big centipede while on a hike up a mountain side. It was a narrow trail and we were all single file and I held up the entire gruppe for a few minutes waiting for the little bigger to pass.....lol....scary!

When my family first moved to Texas in 1967, we rented a house that had been vacant from the time it was built about 6 months earlier. There were a large number of those things infesting the kitchen and bathroom cupboards as well as the garage. I collected them all and stashed them in a large glass jar where they eventually all died. Whew, what a stench. I didn't realize bugs can rot just like any other creature.

It is the snakes you have to worry about, and the feral pigs if you are in the country. You want to have plenty of bird houses around, bird will eat their weight in bugs every day. If you don' have any geckos around your house, go catch a couple and let them go near your porch light. Rather have geckos than spiders.

Armadillos can carry leprosy, did you know that? Friend of mine that was an infectious disease specialist told me that every single case of leprosy he saw practicing in Texas the people had a pet armadillo, so don't get a pet armadillo, or even touch one if you can avoid it.

Aww, man. But Julius here had his leprosy shots already.

My buddy Hank earns his keep by keeping the field mice in check.

But then there was Boarus. He like to chase cars. They got the better of him.
