Diesel down to $2.32
Filled up the F350 yesterday. It was nearly empty and Put in 33 gallons for just over $75.
As I was filling, I noticed the 87 Octane gasoline was $2.49. ![]() There was a report on the local news that with the Iran sanctions dropping and ensuing oil glut, the price of gasoline might drop under $2 per gallon.

When home heating oil gets below $2/gal I'll consider using my oil fired boiler again - not until.

Since diesel is a by product from the refinement of oil and the production of gasoline, it never has made much sense to me why it is normally the higher priced fuel. It's about time it dropped.

Well if you were still in S.D. with the price of gasoline hitting close to $4.00/gal., you would also be paying $4.30+ for diesel. We're always the ones being screwed.

You definitely need to find the cheap stations here in L.A., some will try to charge .50 or $1 more a gallon for diesel than I pay downtown in the gritty area where semis fill up. I've also seen the same cheap prices scattered all over the metro area, though. ![]()

Denis. Down here all the gasoline & fuel prices seem to track the same within a few cents. Seems like it doesn't pay to burn extra fuel to fill up somewhere for 2 cents per gallon less. There definitely doesn't seem to be even a ghost of a free market.

You DO realize this is exactly what's going on, right? A glut is being produced by OPEC member nations with the specific intent of driving the prices down to kill American production (particularly shale oil production) and American petro jobs.
It's likely the break-even point is pretty low (some have even claimed as low as $25/bbl) for shale oil production so I think this is something that's going to stick around for a while - or until the OPEC country oil sheiks get sick of playing the game and want the newer model Ferraris rather than their one or two year old models - then they'll start cutting production again. Whatever the reasons I'm certainly not complaining any. If gasoline goes <$2/gal too I'll be quite happy.

We filled up diesel in OC yesterday for $2.98 and saw a Chevron in Oceanside on the 76 that advertised it at $3.09. Usually .60 cheaper than regular.

I have to take my comment above about diesel fuel prices being over $4.00/ gal. Odd thing. The online diesel fuel and gasoline prices say diesel was over $4.00/gal. When I went into town today, diesel was in the $2.85 range but in checking the online prices later, it still says the highest price for diesel in the past 24 hrs. was $4.00+/gal. I'm confused. Internet I guess.

Marv, if it told you that the highest price for diesel was $4.00, that's probably right. Someone is selling it for that much somewhere. But of course the "normal" price is around/under $3.00.

Now in 993 land ...
|
2.78 here in town for the first fill on the new ecodiesel truck. I am now down to the 993 as the only gas powered car in the household ... good timing? I hope it lasts. Many places here have almost $1 delta between gas and diesel.
This is bad for the oil industry in the US but you do realize that it is a shot in the arm for the rest of the economy. The average household must burn thousands of dollars in gas every year - drop that by 25% - that's a lot of money freed up. G |
