How does a defense lawyer know the difference....
between right and wrong? A lawyer lives near us and has stopped talking to us because we challenged him about a dog escaping from his house and taking a run at the mailman.
Other offences he has committed. He regularly takes his dog into the schoolyard and lets it run freely(when kids are not there). It is a bylaw that dogs are not allowed in the schoolyard. His dog is never on a leash. He says it is well trained and does not need a leash. Bylaw states that a dog must be on leash when it is off the owner's property. He drives too fast. He gets a speeding ticket,. fights it and wins. This lawyer is no longer a defense lawyer because he works for the government. When a neighbour witnesses his "crimes" she asked me where he worked as she was going to report him. I told her I did not wish to tell her because I wanted to protect his job. This sense of entitlement is rampant in our society. If everybody was a lawyer like this dude(or acted like one) we would have a lawless society.... Oh yes one more thing. Our mailman asks us if we could talk to the lawyer because there is a wasp nest at the bottom of his front steps and he could not deliver the mail. My wife's response was that he is unapproachable coz of the dog situation and suggested that he get a written notice from his boss and put it in his mailbox. In my mind it is so much easier to do the correct thing rather than fight the law all the time. I don't get why some people make life hard for themselves. ![]() |

Because in his opinion the law does not apply to him, and his opinion is all that is needed.
He is one of those lawyers that give the other few good lawyers a bad name and bring lawyers up to the level of used car salesmen on the trust meter.

People like this are a s s holes first and then become lawyers, or whatever. The problem is that your neighbor is an a s s hole.

Agreed - there are a lot of good attorneys but the field does seem to disproportionately attract its share of egotistical, self-centered a-holes. Add to those existing problems the sense of superiority and self-righteousness that usually accompanies "esq." after one's name and you have a formula for a person capable of regularly sociopathic behavior (the "if you're not a lawyer you ain't schyte" attitude that many display).
The guy sounds like a prick. Maybe worth an anonymous phone call to the local Bar Association? It'd be interesting to see what (if anything) they'd do. |

No leash? Speeding? Yea, the bar association will be all over that. Not. If there were people in the park, then I would suggest he's just an idiot, but you said there were no kids there. He may still be an entitled idiot. The world is full of them.
Do we need a poll here to see who exceeds the speed limit? I do, every time I drive. Our speed limits are outdated, set in 1950 and unchanged. I'm not taking my life into my hands, and I'm not endangering anyone by driving 20% over the limit on clear sunny day. If that's the bar for being an idiot, then this forum is full of idiots. Bottom line: If the laws are ridiculous people ignore them. Seriously? If that's your biggest problem life ain't too bad. I would prefer your neighbor to mine who cuts his grass once a year, chains his dog outside and lets it bark from 7am to 11pm, parks two or three cars on the road every day, has back-yard that looks like a scrap yard, etc etc. And Canada Post has lots of options for 'undeliverable addresses'. I think they can deal with a wasp nest.

I see many people talking on cell phones driving in the city. They don't have their undivided attention driving. Another reason for no dogs in the schoolyard. Dogs po_p. The po_p does not get picked up or even noticed when milling around a school yard. Little Johnny the next day leaves class and goes into the schoolyard during recess. Dog po_p gets on his shoes and teacher notices the stink. Janitor is told to clean the schoolyard of dog po_p. Yes there are barking dogs in our neighbourhood. The City has a full time job covering all the infractions. I have a lot time of time for the Bylaw Officers. |

No one said there shouldn't be speed limits, or reduced speeds in school zones.
Limiting people to 100 kph or 60 mph in good weather is antiquated and pointless. And you seem more perturbed that he fought his ticket and won (although how you know that makes me wonder exactly what's going on here). Maybe you should be more pissed at the cop who can't get a conviction... No disagreement on dog ****. Clean up after your dog...that's not related to a leash. Lots of people walk their dogs on a leash and never clean up.

I'm not convinced that personality entirely precedes occupation or situation. Some of the biggest A-holes I know came from really humble beginnings yet have morphed into massive egomaniacs as their credentials grew. They seem to have become their own biggest fans.

I've been very close to three lawyers in my time; One of the three remains a very good friend to this day and one remains, well, my sister. Both are wonderful, upstanding people.
The third, however, is no longer a friend (and in retrospect, I wonder if he ever really was - maybe just a sociopath looking for every advantage)...). He turned out to be a man of exceedingly low character, who was not above lying to, and cheating, his "friends". Much of what he said did not mean what he said, was deniable (or would be denied at a later date)... The poster boy for "it depends on what 'is' is..." or "that's not technically what I said"... He's the kind of guy who, when (for instance) caught driving with a dog in his lap, defended his actions by saying there was no specific law saying he could not. I pointed out that there is no specific law against dribbling a basketball on the passenger floorboard while driving either, but our "distracted driving" laws were meant to cover these things. Anyway, I could relate story after story of this man's lack of character. I would never attribute that to his chosen profession, however. I'm convinced he's just that way, and maybe being a lawyer just gave him the means to really refine his "skills". I know more folks who are like that who are not lawyers than I know who are.

To play devil's advocate (no pun!): What if he was a plumber. Would you be just as upset about him? Does he have to be of higher moral character just because he is a lawyer?
That said, I would own a house in the hills here, we were getting pretty close to making an offer, if the real estate agent would not have proudly spilled the beans that a lawyer just had bought the horse ranch right next to it for $3 mil. It was meant to add value to the property. RIGHT! The house I was looking at was order of magnitude less in price and I want to shoot, run dogs, work on cars etc. I passed! Yes, if a plumber would have lived there, I probably would own it now! ![]() G |
