There is an increase in crime in our city....

With the price of oil way down there are increased number of layoffs particularly in Fort Macmurray/tar sands project. So now we have more unemployed workers in Edmonton.
Crime has increased because there are more misbehaving dudes around.

The Police chief here wants to hire an additional 80 police to combat increased crime rate.
Typical crime increase in our area are breaking into cars, stealing parts of cars, burglary.

I don't understand the many home owners and renters who park their cars outside and collect belongings(junk?) in the garage. Cars outside are regularly broken into and gas stolen from the gas tank.

Many homeowners/tenants don't have locks on their gates. Old cars are parked on property with expired tags.
Edmonton tends to have a higher crime rate than other cities of similar size. We lose about 1-2 police officers a year. Keep your eyes open. Secure all valuables and for pete's sake keep your cars in the garage.

Cheers, Guy

Every time that we go for a walk in the neighborhood to our west I see some $30K to $70K cars and pickups parked in driveways and the garage is full of $500 worth or junk. I do not understand it.

If someone has just moved in or about to move out the garage is a good TEMPORARY staging area for the stuff.

Reason seems pretty obvious.

Cars can usually live in the driveway without problem. In most places.

The stuff in the garage can't usually be stored on the driveway. Rain, theft, aesthetics.

Doesn't seem to stop my neighbor from across the street from keeping a coupe mattresses in his driveway and leaned up against the tree in front of his house.

Better to look at an old mattress than an old toilet. Some new owners and tenants put just about anything in the back lane thinking the garbage pick up guys will take it. Not so here.

What do you expect in a consumption lifestyle, people live beyond their means far too much. The US housing economy was a good example of that.

With the 10-100 of thousands of layoffs due to the Saudi's trying to "win" I expect a lot more to come.

This. IMHO, don't miss the right point in time to GTFO. Be one of the first to sell before the spiral starts and values go down significantly ... you are retired, right? Move to a retirement type community that doesn't depend on oil / industry etc. jobs to stay decent.
