I finally saw some .22lr...
Ventured into a new Field & Stream store, and there they were....shelves full of 'em. I don't attend gun shows, etc, but still haven't seen any at Wallyworld when picking up fishin' supplies, etc. I don't need any, they were overpriced IMO, but I almost wanted to do a happy dance
![]() Been years since I've seen any on the shelves ANYWHERE... Just who is controlling the supplies...I always think "follow the money" ![]() |

I have an acquaintance that is very much believes the world is close to Apocalypse. He has tons of ammo and more 22 LR than anything. He says it is easy to carry hundreds of rounds and it will take down most things, including the bad guys coming for his stuff.
He has been buying the entire stock of 22LR when he sees them. He has a fortune in inventory. He says they will be the currency of the future. I just smile and nod my head and change the subject.

It doesn't hurt to have a few 500 bricks of 22 ammo, but 1000s and 1000s of rounds seems rather obssesive.

Yep...the crazy hoarders are the root cause...can't afford to do it indefinitely with the larger calibers, but .22 is cheap enough that it's the only one that's been scarce for a LONG time.

Might I suggest hoarding .44mag for a while
![]() I've adequate supplies of all calibers I have (them too), but I haven't plinked with my .22 (lever or pistol) in a LONG time ![]() |

I haven't seen it in 3-4 years anywhere and don't shoot it anymore since I can't replenish what I use. I've been shooting a lot of 9mm - go figure. It's cheaper and easier to shoot than .22. Weird times.

Funny, I pretty much stopped shooting/buying 22LR when it got scarce. Rimfire is the only stuff I can't reload, so it's just about useless to me if I can't get it cheap.
If ammo is the currency of the future, 22LR will be the pennies. Centerfire will be the paper bills.

What I saw was over .10/round...like you guys, I won't pay that, nor use what I have on hand until I can replenish off the shelf at a reasonable rate. .6 would probably tempt me but I don't do spoon shows.

9mm is available for $0.20 per round (1000 rounds for $199). 22lr for $0.10 is insane. I should price up the machinery...

I moved to .22 pellet guns (20 grain) and have 1100 fps air rifle. FAR cheaper to shoot and I can safely shoot in the back yard.

I'm still wondering if it is the retailers or the manufacturers.

In 2005, I definitely could buy 550 rounds of .22LR for $7. By 2008, it was up to around $15. It has been $50+ for some time.

Ah the good old days...those are the prices I seem to recall too. Don't know who, maybe source, middle men, retailers, or all of 'em???
