I might have cracked the code to knife sharpening.
Old Buck 110. My stepdads. Tinkered with the edge and I just swiped the corner off of a book.

Yep, knife sharpening is a tradeoff between ultra-sharp, and durable edge. I appreciate a well honed edge but need an knife that will withstand lots of repeated use. Different techniques for each.

This. Razor sharp may be ok for surgery, not so ok out in the field.

I have the same knife...bought it some 30 years ago.
Beat the crap out of it out in the field...used it for a hammer a few times and still solid as a rock. Holds a good edge. So, what's the broken code? . ![]()

Do you use some kind of abrasive compound on the leather?

i idid. i'm not a fan of the hollow grind on that Buck. it just feels weird. so i slowly started to try and put a secondary convex edge on it. i used a waterstone and ceramic.
at the office i put some 4 micron emulsion on the back of a sheath for some survey tool. i strop with that. and did with this knife. it got really sharp after that. i need to build a real leather strop paddle..or buy one.

I've hunted with a Buck 110 since I was a child. Field dressed many deer with it.

Vash, PM your address and I'll mail you a strip of thick leather. I have been using this leather as a strop, it works well.

When I first saw it was a Buck 110, I thought you were going to say you'd discovered sending it off to the factory to be sharpened. But I knew better since it was another thread about knife sharpening by you. I just sent my 45 year old 110 there to be sharpened last year. Came back looking new and plenty sharp enough for me. It is impressive to see how it cut the corner of the pages off.

I use Yellowstone on my leather strop for woodworking chisels and my marking knife!
