My daughter and her post high school plans
My daughter Anne graduates from high school in a month. She has made a very informed decision all on her own and I couldn't be more proud of her. She will deferring her admittance to George Washington University in DC for a year and this fall will be headed to Parris Island SC to join the Marines!
She eventually wants to be a JAG, and will go to George Washington for both undergrad and law school. I support her decision 100% and as I mentioned previously I am quite proud of her. Any advice for her relating to boot camp would be appreciated, as well as advice for me as to how I'm supposed to survive knowing she's going through boot camp ha ha. Just thought I'd share because I know there are quite a few that have served here. ![]() ![]() |

I had dinner with a current federal judge/former JAG the other night. If that is the path your daughter wants to be on, then this is my response:

The Island in the summer....that'll be fun.
Her: eyes and ears open, mouth shut. You: be calm. DIs are well trained professionals. They aren't going to let her get hurt....that causes a ton of paperwork. |

Cool kid.
You've done your job well. P.S. Go for a run with her now. After basic training, you will never out pace her again.

Good on both of you. I'd have thought ROTC would work well for her situation but there must be a reason to do it the way she has chosen.

Very cool.
Make sure she is very good shape...have her exceed the minimums for every physical test as much as she possibly can. She will be amazed at how out of shape some of her peers will be. They will be DI magnets. The rest will come to her: Relax, know what you have to know, think and observe. They can't take her birthday away.

That is awesome..thank her for her decision to serve. Your and your wife should be very proud or rearing a child that is making very mature decisions.

A long hard road but I say good luck - and even if she changes course along the way (she might) I suspect she'll do fine. She's obviously got aspirations and ambition which will serve her well whatever she ultimately decides to pursue. And if she does end up in the JAG corps that's just fine too!

I don't understand what your daughter is doing. As far as I know, there are no one-year enlistments. Isn't she deferring college for four years?

AT GW she will be in the Reserves or hopefully get in to the Platoon Leaders Class. Then after senior year she'll go to OCS.

So, is she enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserve and hoping to get an OCS slot after she graduates or is there some sort of program that allows her to go to college without interruption (not get called active during that time)...and guarantees an OCS later? I don't know a lot about Marine programs and am just curious.

She could definitely get called active during her college years, but most likely it would be domestic for something like disaster relief, etc., but there is an outside chance it could be abroad for something. Slim, but possible.

I'm with Fint on this.... Never heard of the process going this way.
I was Army, not Marine, and it's been a while, so admittedly something could be different - but back then you had to have your college in BEFORE you enlisted if you wanted to get an OCS slot.

I would say she is far too smart and pretty for the Marines and you should send her to the AF, but like most, if an AF recruiter is talking, they are likely misrepresenting the chances of something happening (all are optimists). Assignments told my daughter that they could almost guarantee her one of her top choices for he next assignment. She asked for only stateside (nonvol for overseas). She just got an assignment to Korea. now the tell her not to be annoyed, because they promise she will get her choice of follow on assignment. But, when she asked for that in writing the got mad and would not talk to her any more. As a doctor/officer, she gets to work her assignments a little. They will not even talk to junior enlisted folks who are just a number.
I really cannot imagine a Marine Corp Reserve Unit not doing a tour in the sandbox since we are starting to ramp up there again. Last edited by fintstone; 04-20-2015 at 06:49 AM.. |
