Slightly off-topic: why (other than marketing) will the Cayman be cheaper than the Boxster, when it used to be the other way 'round in the past? (Never understood that logic.)

Is Porsche finally acknowledging that they aren't really two separate models, but rather Boxster and Boxster Coupe?

Yes, that's exactly what's happening. Porsche is introducing new model-designation nomenclature: the Boxster and Cayman and all associated models will now be under the umbrella "718." So just as there is a 911 Carrera, 911 Turbo, 911 GT3, etc., there will soon be a 718 Cayman, 718 Boxster, 718 Spyder, and 718 GT4. Since the 911 Carrera cab is always priced higher than the coupe, Porsche is repositioning the Boxster to be higher-priced than the Cayman. I don't know if this means that the base Cayman and base Boxster will have the same engine displacement, but that would make sense.

Porsche would have to make a car for 30 K to sell it at 40 K.

If they were to make a 2000 pound car, or even a 2400 pound car, I would expect it to be more expensive than a Boxster, and not less.

Another looming problem, at least what I've seen anecdotally, is that the 30 and under crowd doesn't seem to be as interested in anything auto-related other than basic transportation and mpg. Maybe the wealthy ones are into "image" but I think most of them, if they're about making a statement, want to show their "green" bona fides.

Will the hybrid-loving generation embrace the sports car at all enough to justify any established manufacturer spending the $$ necessary to go into production on them?

What I find interesting is what is considered 'cheap'. When I purchased my 1968 912 a decade ago in NM it had the original sales documents. It was just over $4k delivered. Using an inflation calculator from da web, that's just under $40k in todays money. The 911 was a few K more. That isn't horrible and it was the top of the line car.

My question is why the up line car should be $90k. Just doesn't make sense.

Does this mean that all the extra electric motors to run the seats and air bags cost $45K?

For the same reason a F150 costs over $45K. It's Ford's cash cow. Porsche is making the majority of their profit from certain models.
