Slightly off-topic: why (other than marketing) will the Cayman be cheaper than the Boxster, when it used to be the other way 'round in the past? (Never understood that logic.)
Is Porsche finally acknowledging that they aren't really two separate models, but rather Boxster and Boxster Coupe?

-Tube frame and aluminum panels and low profiles are out of the picture. -Crash testing now requires many expensive manufacture prototypes to be sacrificed in order to be safe for going up against SUVs on the streets and highways. I needn't go into the political insurance element of this. -Regardless of the brand or offering, consumers will always go for 'a little bit more' luxury and room in anything. That bumps the weight and the price back up to the bloated 25mpg Honda Civics(sedan only) that are seen on the market these days.

Porsche would have to make a car for 30 K to sell it at 40 K.
If they were to make a 2000 pound car, or even a 2400 pound car, I would expect it to be more expensive than a Boxster, and not less. |

Another looming problem, at least what I've seen anecdotally, is that the 30 and under crowd doesn't seem to be as interested in anything auto-related other than basic transportation and mpg. Maybe the wealthy ones are into "image" but I think most of them, if they're about making a statement, want to show their "green" bona fides.
Will the hybrid-loving generation embrace the sports car at all enough to justify any established manufacturer spending the $$ necessary to go into production on them?

Well for sure they have produced a lot of "entry level " cars in the past...and if that predicts the future your a winner.

They've already nixed it with not wanting to "dilute the brand"

But haven't their "entry level" cars still generally been a fair amount more expensive than many/most other cars?

Masraum,
The Porsche 914: A History Quote-""Plus, with a price tag of about $3,500 when it was introduced in 1970, the 914 would be quite affordable (that's only about $20 grand in today's dollars). AND it had a Porsche badge! If such a car were made today, people would be stabbing each other's faces in the streets for the chance to buy one."" end. As I remember a striped dwn Nova was a little less than 3K . It was the deal we kids drooled over.

I think the Emission Cheating at VAG will determine what happens in the next few years. I thought the BlueSport Concept was good and could have been spread across the brands ![]() |

What I find interesting is what is considered 'cheap'. When I purchased my 1968 912 a decade ago in NM it had the original sales documents. It was just over $4k delivered. Using an inflation calculator from da web, that's just under $40k in todays money. The 911 was a few K more. That isn't horrible and it was the top of the line car.
My question is why the up line car should be $90k. Just doesn't make sense. Does this mean that all the extra electric motors to run the seats and air bags cost $45K?
