So your whole family drove back to Cali in the SC? Hope your kids are small!
Looks like a really nice car, wouldn't expect anything less for you Matt. The trade was a straight across deal? Well done! Sounds like the rustang was a nice example, I'd like to see the relative value in five years or so. ![]() Love that steering wheel! Cheers Richard Last edited by tevake; 03-17-2016 at 08:03 AM.. |

I thought the front spoiler was factory installed only in conjunction with the rear spoiler? Did the dealer simply bolt the chin spoiler on?
Nice car for sure. Mine has the same rear window that drops down on the sides. Manual top and three-spoke steering wheel are big pluses too, although your wheel looks like a later version.

Looks like a really good car, congrats. They are getting so much less common on the market. The engine refresh and SSIs are a huge deal, they all need this and it's $$$$.
One thing, though. The cabriolet conversion was done by someone local in AZ., not the Porsche factory according to that paperwork. That second sticker was something that dealers slapped-on the window next to the Munroney, usually for their dealer mark-up and a few dealer installed accessories, as listed on yours. I'm sure it was a good job and it looks like they used a factory top and frame, (what else would they use), I'm surprised they did not charge more. From a mechanical POV, it is not a difficult conversion. All factory cabs are just targa shells w/o the roll bar. The top of windshield bar was exactly the same, IiRC. The tea tray spoiler was the optional rear spoiler from Porsche on the SC in those years. That switched to the smaller Carrera spoiler in '84 with the 3.2. I used to see a lot of grey market, ROW SCs at the dealer in the '80s with the "sport package" option which was spoilers F/R and sport shocks. The tea tray on this car was added by customer or dealer if it's not on the Munroney sticker. I'd strongly suggest getting the 915 shifter and linkage working perfectly vs. putting any kind of quick/gate shifter on it. 915 transmissions are amazing but need to be shifted correctly, if you "beat the synchros" with the speed of your shifts, you'll be opening your wallet really wide.

Nice SC Matt. Looks very clean. What are those allen bolts on the top edge of the dashboard?

Snaps for the full tonneau cover. (Seats need to recline aft then the tonneau comes up and over to the dash.) My '84 has different tonneau fasteners closer to the base of the windshield.

I love the tonneau cover option on those cars. You can drive it w/ just the drivers seat unzipped, it's like wearing the car.

I skimmed right over the fact that this is an '82 and a Cab conversion. How cool is it that the original owner simply paid the money to convert it to a Cab before delivery? That has to make it special in terms of preservation, especially with the paperwork noting the conversion.

Thanks all!
Denis, the conversion was done by the dealership pre-delivery, that's why you see the conversion cost added to the MSRP at the bottom. You are correct that it was not done by Porsche in Germany. In doing research on the car I actually found the conversion instructions from Porsche posted online, so this was obviously done pretty frequently before the factory cabs started hitting the market. The spoiler was an add-on but is an OEM tail and lid, I have the original non-tail rear decklid as well. At some point I might put the original back on just for something different. I am definitely re-acquainting myself with the deliberate nature of the 915 gearbox. I want to add the Wevo or Rennshift not for the sake of shifting quicker, but I prefer the spring loaded shifter "planes" that make missing a shift much more difficult. Because I have long legs I will probably also get an extended shift knob. Add some fresh Swepco and an adjustment and life will be good.

Great story, nice car Matt, congratulations!
I've always been partial to bronze shift coupler bushings and new bushings throughout the linkage.

Looks good Matt, very clean, I like it.
I also couldn't stay away from air cooled vehicles, so I will be starting a thread when I get a chance about my new to me Westy. Bill |

Nice ride, Matt. I'm partial to GP white, (though I prefer champagne interiors) and the pre-production cab makes it a great 'story' car to hold onto for a while....

Matt, I love the story, great to have the original factory invoice. Best part may be your better half wants you to keep this one. Upgrading the shifter is an excellent plan, I've had mystery synchro issues surface on 915s in the past. Really like GP white, that was the color of my first 911. Glad to see you're back in air cooled heaven!

Nice car.
Keep it in view at all times or leave the top down. Had a stabbed cab in not to long ago. Big bucks to repair.

Cool car with some interesting history. Congrats...
That said, no one could have told me a couple of decades ago when I got into this hobby that someday a "pristine" 2008 Roush 427R would be a straight across trade for an '82 SC, no matter its mileage and condition. No way in hell. What on earth has happened to our hobby?

When you consider that a Ferrari 308 is about $100k, suddenly spending $30k+ for a 911SC sounds reasonable. Everything is relative, and I think the 911 has been undervalued for decades.
