What do you use to carry your kayak?

I used to just throw it in the back with the tailgate open when we lived by a lake but now I need to put it up top. Looking at a Yakima roof rack for the LR3 and maybe hully rollers? Anybody use those?

What's the easiest way to get one up there?

My wife has a Thule rack on her Civic, with the J brackets. They're ok, but do require lifting each boat up onto the roof, which she can't do by herself. They're reasonably stable, but I wouldn't put anything but a plastic boat on them. The beauty of the cheap J brackets is there's enough room for 2 boats, and 2 bikes on her roof.

Rollers would be the easiest to load, and unload with. Especially since your roof height is probably head level to you, and hard to lift a boat up onto.

I have the Hully Rollers and with the saddles up front for my sea kayak.

They take a bit of screwing around to get right but they work well.

My youngest son spent many summers in Ely Minnesota, the canoe/kayak capital in the US. I have seen many ways to put canoes/kayaks on cars and trucks. The folks up there take their boating seriously. I took allot of pictures of vehicles and boats. This one is my all time favorite.

The coolest one I saw was on a truck with a cap on it, it had hinges that let the whole mount fold down the side of the truck, so you could mount the kayak at shoulder height, strap it in then push the whole mount up to lock in to the brackets in the roof of the cap.

I'll see if I can find a link, very ingenious

Found it!

Not relating to the PO, but pretty neat kayak transport.
