Has anyone seen a benefit from this? I had a profile i remembered yesterday and updated my info. Waste of time? Facebook for work titles? Anyone got a gig out of this?

It's great. As a company We use it to hire talent, research the enem and keep in touch with business contacts. As an individual I tend to get a few recruiters reaching out to me. It's a good tool and the pro membership is worth the cost for corporate use.

Got my current job through LinkedIn... sort of. I went through my contact list and requested recommendations from several people. One called me the next day and offered me the job.

Dr. Brown's office is probably hiring. Not sure if you can handle the hookers and blow...

I think it's more of an expectation thing - a prospective employer these days is probably more concerned about someone with no online presence at all. While I utterly despise so-called "social media" and have not / will not ever have a Facebook, Myspace, instrgram, etc. account, I do have a LinkedIn one mostly because I know I'm relocating / changing jobs soon and I want prospective employers to know I'm not BS-ing them when I talk about what I've done, who I've worked with, etc.
It's sort of a necessary evil these days. I simply ignore the invite requests from people I have no idea who they are (mostly headhunters and scammers I figure). I don't have time for their nonsense / sales pitches. I just want to show that I am essentially who I present myself to be in a traditional interview upon later scrutiny / research.

Yeah, I looked at (and passed on) that Houston job about a decade ago. They offered a starting salary of $325. But it seemed a bit shady to me, both the business model and the guilt-by-association with the head doc.

It's the only place on the web where you will find my real name and what I'm about, have no interest in Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc
As I offer design/engineering services through my own company I use it as an online presence, not really advertising as I've not needed to do that yet. Its there is someone wants to Google me or are looking for a particular set of skills. I've had a few offers but use it mainly to keep track of where past work colleagues are. I request and accept link ups but only if there is a common interest, compatible skills, industry connections, mutual beneficial opportunities etc to my area of work

I was recruited for my current job through LinkedIn. I use it frequently for recruitment purposes, and keeping tabs on professional contacts that have moved away. It is hugely useful, and once you get a profile set up requires almost no maintenance.

Linkedin is awesome for recruiting. We use it for most of our hiring (~4,000/year) and it has saved us 80% on recruiting fees while bringing in high quality talent. If you are looking or considering looking for a job, it is mandatory IMHO. However, Facebook, Instagram, etc. can skewer your career if you are not careful.

I have linkedIn, not really looking for a job (right now) but my job (Science Museum tech) takes me all over the U.S.A. and I use it to stay in touch with other museums/people I have worked with over the years to see what they are up to.
I have facebook to keep in touch with friends and family out of state or out of the country. I agree the facebook thing has gotten blown out and over grown... but how else can I keep track of what my friends had for lunch or fluffy's incontinence? Anyone else hear the LinkIn got hacked? I started getting spam in my email... you don't suppose?

^Indeed it was hacked. It was recent news recently but seems just for a few days. Somehow they've managed damage control and not much further discussion about it. This one though may be more damaging and or for future mischief.
The problem with all these 'so called' required membership is it really isn't necessary but we've become complacent and its now the norm. All of this IT stuff is above my head but ironically know of a few individuals way up in the career ladder in regards to related security. One with a particular largest banking / ins. company and another associated with Fed. govt. acronym you would not want knocking on your door. The first one mentioned shares some scary situations and what we're all up against. The other individual is zip tight on any discussion. Boggles the mind to see that every individual, form a newborn to senior who may not even know what a computer is, that their life is affected by it. Now for the social media sites, those are becoming way more intrusive, even to those who've never heard of them. Truly crazy. Say for example your teenage kid loves prancing around the house, takes vids / pics and post them. Or, perhaps visiting a friends house, innocently taking and posting more pics. Theirs face recognition, and all the coding that nails down who those other individuals are in the image and where they were.
