This video is made by a sensible user who appears to understand the technology and uses it appropriately.
It's very long, you can just FFWD and watch snippets...

Then why did the Autopilote not avoid the hit? I've read a very interesting analysis by an automotive expert. Sadly it is in German only, but you might understand the point with Google Translate. Und der gesunde Menschenverstand?: Die großen Irrtümer der Autoindustrie - n-tv.de Wenn man nicht weiß, was man tut: Die großen Irrtümer der Autoindustrie - n-tv.de The automated driving is not reducing the stress for a normal driver. The driver has to be alert all the time as he is not deciding and driving with the own knowledge and reaction. Last edited by Holger; 09-30-2016 at 12:13 AM.. |

Tesla is tripling down on Autopilot.
Forbes Welcome "Tesla Motors said late Wednesday that all Model S sedans, Model X sport utilities and even Model 3 sedans, which go into production next year, are getting sensors, cameras, massive computing power and software that will, at some point, allow them to achieve the highest level of autonomous driving. “The full autonomy hardware suite will be standard on all vehicles Tesla makes from here on out,” Musk said in a conference call. That suite includes eight cameras mounted around the vehicles to get a 360-degree field of view, 12 new ultrasonic sensors to detect hard and soft surfaces and a new forward-facing radar that can see through “heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead,” the company said. Processing this vast amount of data is an on-board supercomputer with 40 times the power of the computer Tesla has used up to this point. That device – presumably Nvidia’s Drive PX, though Tesla didn’t identify the maker in its blog post – is capable of doing 12 trillion processes per second, Musk said. Guiding it is new “neural net” processing software developed by Tesla. While the powerful new equipment promises a major advance, the point at which all that technology is fully activated isn’t clear. The company will have two packages utilizing the equipment, including an enhanced version of its Autopilot system and a more fully automated driving option that would be available as an $8,000 option, Musk said. To show how far Tesla’s self-driving technology has advanced, as early as late 2017 the company intends to demonstrate a fully autonomous cross-country drive from Los Angeles to New York City, with no assistance from a human driver, he said on the call."

Strange that any on a Porsche enthusiast BBS would be so happy about a quiet pod that needs no driving skill.
I suppose the big upside is the driver, I mean rider, can play Angry Birds while being whisked thru town. --Progress!

The stress of having to be constantly alert to an emergency that may or may not arise, whilst essentially being a passenger, would , certainly for me, be far worse than driving the car myself.
It would be rather like supervising a learner driver, one hand ready all the time to grab the wheel and the parking brake. Learners at least only should be driving slowly, whereas the automated car will be travelling at 103 feet/second(70 mph) on the highway, so much quicker reactions will be needed on the rare occasion that human intervention is required. How will the computers handle the idiot motorcycles that weave through lanes of traffic? Now, if motorcycles were automated, their computers would not permit such reckless behaviour.

But this is only if you know the other driving. Kids growing up now will maybe not know other ways to drive/get from one point to another. They might not feel that stress. |
