When I hear "... can you hear me ok", I hang up and block the phone number on my phone. Seems I'm getting more of them lately.

I haven't gotten this new one - but people normally say something first when they answer their phone. The bot waits, then gives its spill.
I can tell its a bot if I stay silent, and nothing happens, nothing happens, nothing happens....finally i go "burp", and it starts its spill. This may not even bother with voice recognition, it asks questions at the end of everything, records the question, then makes the next statement followed by a question. No smarts needed. Try it, give it stupid answers. "Can you hear me ok?" you "No I cannot."

Some (many) years ago this was also a problem here in Germany.
But then something changed. Companies doing those calls did have to have your ok to do so, you had to order those calls. Otherwise this could get very expensive for the companies. Havent had one single such call for a loooong time (several years). So yes, bringing a law against such calls MIGHT work if it is done in the correct way. In Sweden you can make a legal contract by saying "Ja" ("Yes") on the phone. And the calls seems still to be legal in Sweden. Some of those companies are editing the recorded calls and making a "Ja" out of the things you have said - or not. I swear they make a "Ja" out of a "Nej" ("No"). ;-) |

some years ago before the crazy calls, we started to receive sales phone call and we answer them like normal folks and were charged per phone calls by the telephone company. We had to go through hell on the phone trying to straighten them out with Verizon. By the end of the month, we owe them over 150 bucks from those calls.

We had a rash of door to door salespeople a few years ago. Cold calling door to door has to be a real challenge. I just told every single one the same thing. II never ever under any circumstances purchase anything at all from someone knocking on my door or just calling me. It is a unbreakable and unchangeable policy" I developed that policy back when I was much younger and single. I had a nice looking couple knock on the door. They offered me a free 2 liter bottle of my favorite soda (at the time) if I would listen to them. I was just reading a book at the time so I let them in. They were selling heat detectors. Not smoke detectors but heat detectors. They were mechanical wind up gizmos that would clang and clatter if they detected heat above a certain point. No batteries, just the mechanical spring. Then they went through the things that can start fires. They made it sound like my house was about to burn to the ground from all the possible ignition points. It really got comical. The real kicker is those heat detectors were several hundred bucks each and I would "need" several to be safe. I finally told them to leave and I enjoyed the soda.

In England, if you press and hold 9 the call cuts off and is supposed by law to be removed from the mailing list. They circumvent this by dialling using another number.

I don't know if you guys are referring to your land line telephones (I don't even have one, anymore) or not, but I downloaded the Truecaller app to my cell phone a couple of weeks ago and when a spam call comes in, it tells you it is a robocall. The app is free, too, and I believe there is another free app or two out there if you are interested.
