Most, maybe not all, fast growing trees don't live long. Cottonwood and cherry grow like weeds here. The cottonwoods grow tall and thin and fall over, the cherries are structurally weak and prone to insect infestations.

Wonder how they would do in ORD?
Probably not good in that part of the country.

And they grow fast.
About 7 years ago I was bringing one home in the back of my pickemup (maybe 8 feet tall including the bucket it was planted in), now it's over 25 feet.

Check out the neighbor's tree down the street, you can see that bad boy from a long ways away:

We have cottonwood trees around here that are ancient and huge. They make a huge mess and it can look like snow when they are making cotton. They are very messy.

Everyone hates them except pool guys and AC repair guys.

Plant another maple...

We live on 5 acres, and have maples, oaks, and everything in between...

The oaks are dying, looks like from ants/borers...

The maples look the healthiest.

Your neck of the woods has tons of borer insects...

FYI... most of our trees are 150+ years old, and almost all are hollow on the inside I think... We ended up cutting several down to plant our house, and the heartwood was gone...

If a tree lives long enough, insects, borers, weather... eat away at the inside.

Of interest, the trees themselves look great, tons of leaves...

I bought one of these from them, a six footer. We'll see how that works out.

Thanks.

Thought I'd edit without bumping the thread, will bump in ten years.

The new tree as planted last night.

Thanks.
You'll be happy with it ....they are great trees. I have a mature 40-50 yr old one in my yard and it's the best tree I have, even comparing it to the hard maples next to it. One of the best things about it is the fall clean-up is practically nothing from this tree. I think its because of the large size leafs that have no points...all rounded....they blow away in the wind easily and don't get stuck in the lawn.
