Which convertible is better looking to you? Which would you buy and why?

The new Miata
BMW Z4
986 Boxster
M3 convertible from the early 2000s
S2000
Toyota MR2 Spyder

The choices are all over the place, I know. These are the verts I like however but I am biased. I think the Z4 is most beautiful so I bought one but if I were to choose based on performance and value, it would have to be the 986.

There's always one.. you give them a menu and they will want to choose a dish that isn't on there...

I want the chef's special - not on the menu.
Actually, I find all the listed options boring. I wouldn't pay the price for any of them.

The Z4 is a POS. My dad and brother have had several Z3 and M Roadsters. Dad had a Z4 and the build quality it not on the same level, not even close.

Given your choices, I would go with Boxster, Miata, S2000...

Yeah, but at least he suggested the one with the engine under the hood instead of the midengined model... those had lots of cooling problems.

Two completely different questions... each requiring a different scratch of the head for me:

Which convertible is better looking to you?
I'm partial to the looks of both bimmers, but I like all of them except the new Miata. I just haven't really cared for what they've done with it since the 1st gen.

Which would you buy and why?
I'd have to drive them all and experience how each one felt doing everything. I'd probably end up with one of the last three, maybe favoring the M3. The newer and more computerized cars have become, the less I like them.

986 for me. I think it's starting to have a nice a vintage look, plus it's fairly small like a z3.

I also like the e36 and e46 vert.

As far as Miata goes, I'll take the latest before the new body style. I haven't warned up to it yet....

986 hands down. Best looking, best performing, best value. I love mine.

I think your simple descriptors are correct.

I considered almost all of those but did not like the looks of the MR Spyder, S2k needed to get to VTEC to get power out of it, and would probably get stolen here.

That left Z4, Boxster or E46 M3. I love the M3, but most of the ones I saw were kind of beat. There was a really nice Z4 M Roady for sale, but it was a CDN import and the speedo and odo were still in KM. It also had a Hamann body kit with some chrome rims. I could get new rims, but the owner was kind of flaky.

Fast forward a year and I kept looking for some kind of vert and a friend called me about an 08 Boxster base that someone wanted to sell with very low miles. He sent me a crappy video that sort of showed some damage to the front bumper, but again it was a grainy crappy video. I bought it sight unseen and had a bunch of cleaning to do. Some old lady had it and passed away, so her brother was selling it. He didn't prep the car, so it had some kind of lotion all over the steering wheel, door handle, visor... She was also a canoe paddler so it was a little rough inside. Now, one year later, I had the front bumper fixed, did a brake job last weekend, had a broken top transmission and a few other things and I still love this car. It now has 18.5k on it and while I crave a little more power, I still prefer driving it to my turbos. The dog loves it, too.

Get a Boxster!

Probably the new Miata is the best car.

Me however would go for the S2000 because I like Hondas. And they go like stink if you give them LOTS of rev's.

From that list... The Boxster is the most desirable but I'm 51 and would never even consider a convertible.

Why not a vert when you're 51? I'll be 53 this year.

I like that '63 Galaxie too, Ese.

MR2 Asian hairdresser - that's funny!

I'm 51 and love verts. Btw, I have a full head of hair. Other friends that were lacking in that dept, didn't like verts.
