Indeed Stijn. I'd never heard it before this morning. I thought he'd been hit by a car. The nurse at the animal hospital was waiting in the car park and took him straight in. Within 5 minutes the vet came out and told us what it was. Horrible.

starting to think a lot of times when owners found their cats like that, cars have gotten the blame for what was really saddle thrombus, and it's only now getting properly named because there is a recent uprise of dedicated small pet vet clinics.. where previously the old general vets probably never did the full diagnostic and were of the old "shot of antibiotics or steroids and see if the animal bounces back" method.

lost my first cat from such an old vet..Bubba came home with small limp, vet took a look, shot of steroids, let me know if he still has issues.
Bubba did bounce back from the steroids, the next day was up and about, went walkies even.
but he had a busted rib and when he felt better , that rib turned into his lung and killed him in quite some agony.

The vet still knows to give me a wide birth on the street

Fancy vet clinic for my crew now..

Sorry to hear this. He sounds like he was an excellent member of the family.

Exactly the same thing happened to my cat five years ago. I loved that cat and he had the most marvellous home life that he cherished. He was an ex-wildcat, that had finally found the home he loved. A best friend cat next door to talk about cat things with all day, then slept on my bed at night. So unfair.

Sorry for your loss, it is never easy to lose a fur baby. He looks like Mr Grumps, on of the ferals that I feed. He is very friendly towards me, the only thing keeping me from trying keep him, is Cayman is old, and I don't want to stress him, and I have not been able to get Mr Grumps checked out for kitty diseases.

Thanks Bill. This little fella was the same. My wife could stand out the front and call him and he'd come running home. My wife said this morning he was her feline soul mate and she was his human soul mate.

Thanks Bryon. They look like distant cousins lol. It's tough. My wife was crying all night because her boy wasn't with her.

Stijn, I think some vets have a lot to answer for. I actually took him to the vet maybe 6 months ago because I noticed he was breathing fast when totally asleep. He also had a wheezy sound. The vet done all the usual checks and said he might have an upset tummy. Apparently an ultrasound is the only way to check their heart, but I'd suggest that most people don't want that because it's expensive, therefore they don't bother putting that forward. We are the type of people that would spend whatever is necessary for a good outcome for the animal. Hell, we were spending about $500 a month on meds for our German Shephard after she suffered a cardiac event. Someone said that she only made it another two years. Yes...but they were 2 quality years to us, 14 quality years to her. If I was dying and a Dr said that on meds you'd get an extra 14 quality years, I'd pay whatever too.

Hugs from Oregon...over a year since my buddy died...I still feel sad. I guess you never really get over it. We've decided no more kits...because of our ages. Reached the stage of life where we may go before a pet does.

When my Teener was diagnosed with cancer, I too paid up for the meds, she had a good life and an extra year, most importantly, she was happy. She stayed in my lap when I was down from getting creamed in the 968. She passed literally while walking through the kitchen, and she never went and hid, like animals do when dying.
I rescued her as a tiny kitten

They took care of me when I couldn't move around.

Cancer in animals sucks. How old was she when you first out there was an issue?

And well done on rescuing her. Our boy and his sister we rescued from the junkie losers that lived next to us briefly. We still have the sister and she's doing poorly today because she can't find her brother. They have been inseparable since birth.

She was 15 or 16, truly heartbreaking.
Cayman had a hard time adjusting to her passing and being the only cat in the house, read back on his reactions. Now, anytime I am home, he is in lap or shoulder, has him morning routine all set .

Boogedy.
Now a lap cat and cuddler. Before, a fearful biter. Took almost 3 years to get this one past whatever trauma she'd suffered before.

This is the little fella and his sister, Shadow. They have been together since birth. Slept, together, hunted together etc. Poor little girl isn't doing well. She's looked everywhere for him and has started becoming very vocal. Taking a few days off work so I can stay home with her. She's gunna need lots of cuddles.

Cayman went over a month acting odd, but he is back to normal.

I know what you mean

I took on a brother and sister who the SPCA were looking after and using in a cruelty case against a woman. Sadly because of their bad start in life Lucy cat died of kidney failure and the woman lived. Lucy's brother is happy and healthy, but he did change the day Lucy died. Sometimes I just find the injustices of life almost too much to take.
