All these derogatory remarks concerning flippers reminds me of the posts where people find valuable items like watches or stereo equipment at garage sales or Goodwill AND THEN BRAG ABOUT HOW THEY GOT THE ITEM WAY LESS THAN WHAT IT IS WORTH. These people are "taking advantage" of the seller the same way a flipper buys a car and then resells at a higher price.
Situational ethics! When you're the buyer well that's just business. When you're the seller then how dare they take advantage of the person that under-priced the item! |
It all boils down to in the end all a man has is his word.
I sold my SSI HE's on here. Had two offers 15 minutes apart exactly the same. Told the second guy if the first guy dropped out for some reason they were his. First guy did drop out but told me to advertise them on the Early S board and I should get full retail for them as the guys there are looking for those HE's. I shipped them this last week to the second guy for the agreed price even tho I could have made $550 more for them to fund my dogs ACL operation. It's not always about the money, it's about doing the right thing. |
Who was the gentleman here that bought the old Merc convertible for way under the value of the car? At the time, I thought that wasn't quite right but after thinking about it, if someone is too lazy to do their homework on the value of something, then what the heck....
I have sold a ton of stuff on the local online buy and sell (Kijiji) and there are other reasons that I will give preference to a the first person to respond to the ad. One of the biggest reasons is that I don't want random people having my address. When emailed I ask for a phone to text the address to. If they do not show up, I move on to the second. If priced right, the item will usually be picked up by the first person to see it. Congrats on the (mostly) painless sale of your car. I wonder if you will be one of those that regrets selling? |
I don't put conditionals on doing the right thing. Strangers, business...those are just excuses.
Do the right thing across the board in your life and you, and all those around you, will be better off for it. Quote:

We can agree to disagree on this. Like I said. Since the OP promised to hold the car he should stand by his word. I don't think anyone her is disputing that. I simply said that I would never make such a promise and its my right to do so. We just conduct business differently that's all. I don't think its a litmus test to measure ones moral compass. |
Fair enough.

Funny thing: I think the original point of the OP's post was that he marveled that the young kid kept trying to get him to break his word. It was about the kid's lack of understanding that your word is your bond. The thread has changed to selling at the right price... giving someone a time frame to get there... flippers...

The flippers that help the enthusiast are the ones who buy items (like fuchs), put together sets and resell them. |

I was thinking the same thing. The entire thread is about keeping your word, yet the car was advertised at 28K but he showed it to at least one other guy and ended up selling it for 32K ?:confused::confused: In other words, I'll hold it for you until 7:30 but if I get better offers I'm raising the price. lol |

I've sold probably 20 cars in my life. I've dealt with (what I think is) every buyer-related PITA that can be imagined. I've held cars for people that were going to buy it, but never showed and suddenly went dark. I've shaken hands on a price, only to have someone "go get the money" and come back and try to beat me up on the price. I've shaken hands on a price, only to have someone "go get the money" and never come back. I've moved around my plans, at great inconvenience, only to have a no-show. I've had people beg for this or that, and not follow through.
At this point, it's first to show up with cash gets it. I'm very clear with all potential buyers on this. Do you need to go home to get a check? Great, I'm still going to show the car. Need to check with your brother/father/husband/wife/priest/life coach/broker/mechanic/astrologist? Great, I'm still going to show the car. I have accepted significant deposits, but I'm very clear that if someone shows up with cash, you are getting your deposit back. (Not sure why people still give me deposits after my spiel, but they do.) When I sold my wife's last car, I ran it this way. It was WAY less BS for us. We were doing 4 showings a night (most I would take so I still had a life), we sold it on the second day, second showing. They took it for a test drive, and handed over a big stack of cash. I called the remaining appointments and told them don't bother. Two of them were people from the first night that wanted to come back later. |
Count me third as wanting to know how Henry hill got the buyer to offer $5k more than the original asking price.
One possible explanation is that Henry have used the other buyer as leverage, and raised the price when the gentleman arrived at 7pm. Looking forward to the answer |

I would totally keep my word for for $4,000.
The way I read it he only asked if $28k was fair, he never said what he was asking...maybe he was asking $32 and intended to take as low as $28? |

Still waiting to hear how "Mr. Integrity" got the buyer to offer $5k more than asking price.

Who there partner. . You agreed to a possible sale, and your asking price is , at 28k, at 7:30 that night. Then you waited like you said you would. Thats nice. Then you got lots of feedback about your asking price. You are then thinking, you just f##ked up. You, and many others, bought these cars for 7,8 10,12 thousands dollars. Now it seems like you made the guy pay, and maybe he agreed to after some, (i can get more) comments, more than you were asking. Did you not agree on a price advertised on your cl ad? I find it hard you agreed to your moral standards. Sad.
