Microsoft Project for Mac

I need help. Apparently there is not a direct MS Project (like Excel, Power Point, etc.) program for Mac.

My company just signed a contract with a large aerospace firm and they specify Project for specific management tasks. I thought I would just download MS Project this afternoon and get started.

I have done some basic research today on alternative programs than may work.

Do any of you guys have any recommendations?

I really do not want to move away from my Mac.

Thanks!

Install Parallels 12 and Windows 10, then run any Windows software you like on your Mac.

Post if questions.

Looking at it now.

Only one quick question: I have just upgraded to MS 2016 for Mac...is it possible to install Parallels 12 and just MS Project? Do I need the Windows 10 software?

Stupid, I know...bear with me.

I would install Virtual Box and run a Windows 7 vm in it with whatever MS specific software you needed. VirtualBox is free, cross platform and works well. Windows 7 is still "the standard" in the business world. I'm sure you have an old computer you can use the Win 7 license from.

No issues with Office 365 using Linux and Chrome... Safari sucks as a browser anyway.

I use MS Project all day, every day. Don't even bother to look for alternatives, none are worth a damn. As others have said, use Parallels, Virtualbox or dual boot your Mac

I spent the past few hours reading all the possible alternatives on line, calling a number of alternative provider help lines, reading tech reviews, etc....you and jyl are spot on.

Thanks, Gents!

If I'm not editing a project plan I use an app called "Project Viewer 365" to do a quick open an view on my Mac. If I need to edit, then I spin up my VM, or a VDI.

Pretty much.

I use VMWares Fusion, Paralles and Virtual Box.

Virtual box is great because it's free.

For this I would go with one of the other two commercial options.

They allow Windows apps to run / appear as if they were native Mac Apps. IE: non windowed.

It's just cleaner.

Parallels is the current #1 in the Apple virtualization space.

If you have a PC that you are using that already has Project on it you can use that PC to set up the Virtual one on your Mac.

The benefit there is you are replicating an existing environment and don't have to go through the trouble of installing all your other "stuff"

I did just that when I worked for one of DOD's security suite providers.

They wanted me to carry their POS Dell standard issue box.

I cloned it as a virtual machine on my Mac along with all the certs and company tools.

Stuck the Dell in a desk drawer and forgot about it.

The whole time they were issuing patches and certs to the virtualized version on my Mac.

When I left I handed in the Dell and they had no idea it had not been turned on in two years.

You have to install Windows, it is easiest if you have the ISO file. Parallels creates a virtual PC inside MacOS, you run Windows on that virtual machine, and run your Windows application in that instance of Windows. Install Parallels Tools as well (it's pretty automatic), then choose Coherence mode and your Windows application will look and act like it is running natively in Mac OS. Windows and Mac applications can use the same clipboard, access the same drives and files. It will be a little confusing at first but not for long.

I run MS Office 365 for Windows in Parallels, that is by choice, I prefer it to the Office for Mac, and Parallels makes it easy. I also think Windows 10 is very good, so no reason to use Windows 7 or Vista or the misbegotten 8. I actually like the Edge browser and if I weren't so lazy I'd switch to Outlook for email.

Parallels 12 costs about $100, Windows 10 a little less. Parallels + Windows consume about 1-2 GB of RAM.

MAC address cloning? Please say yes. Because if they didn't even check, that would be kinda disturbing.

If you have Office16 thru 365 it will let you download to more than one computer. Just log into Office365 with the virtual PC and download away. Depends on the Office365 license you have whether Project is included or a separate app, we have licenses both ways.

Use both Fusion and Parallels. Do support so have to have Mac, Win7, and Win10. And also both Office10 and Office16. Have 4 virtual machines Win7 and Win10 under Fusion and Parallels both. Currently Fusion is way sucky slow with Win10 using VPN to get into the work LAN for accessing servers and doing remote desktop.

MAC addresses for VM's can be set to whatever you want.

Obviously to avoid a conflict you would only do that using an address you know would never show up on the network.

Like one from a device turned off and locked in a drawer.

Agreed, not sure of Windows 10, prefer 7 but the emulation works great providing you have the RAM

Primavera P6 is vastly better but also has a FAR steeper learning curve and will likely be overkill for what most people need.

It's one of the few reasons I still keep around Parallels / Windows on my Mac - well, that and Revit... Until Autodesk decides to get offa their butts and make a Mac version.

You can buy the 2016 for Mac for about $125

Here is the link for the Cdn store (it won't let me go the the US store...).

https://products.office.com/en-ca/buy/compare-microsoft-office-products?tab=omac

I work for a large Defence Company and I got it for free through the company licenses.

He needs Project.

It's not available for the Mac.
