I've not been more proud of my Son...sticking up for a tran

These days sure can be confusing with gender identity and all. There is a person in my Son's class that has the genetics and biology of a male yet dresses and identifies as a female. This person dresses like a young women and wears make-up and answers to a womens name. There is a young man in my Son's class that has been bullying this person. Today Max told the kid in class to stop or it or the kid was going to regret it. Not wanting to jeopardize his place on the shooting team if he got in a fight, he did the right thing and went the administration and provide statement explaining the behavior. The bully has been removed from the class. My Son my or may not face other issues form other kids because of this. Sympathizing with trannys in Texas is not the most popular thing to do especially in HS. When he told me what he did he said "Dad, I don't agree with the idea of a born boy dressing like a chick. Its freaking weird but I really don't like bullys and life must be real confusing for this he/she so I had to do something. I could have pounded the s... into the ground bulling this poor thing but I did what I thought was the right thing. I went to the AP and made a statement saying that this kid was saying some pretty rude things and basically bullying this tranny. It ain't right. I had to do what was right" You did Max. You did. (tear in eye)

In fact the bully may have been a bit confused himself and acting extra macho to compensate.

Attaboy Max! I get the feeling that should Max face any reprisals he'll be able to handle that just fine...maybe even the old fashioned way.

I'll say! With all the brainwashing they're subjected to.

That's good! However, you may want to reconsider the term "tranny".

I understand the point of the story. It simply strikes me as at least ironic (but closer to worse) that a derogatory term would be used to describe the person being bullied. disclaimer: I'm far from perfect myself and am not trying to be a jerk but thought the point was relevant considering M.D. has authored a few books in which terminology plays a prominent role.

Trans-gender? MD did say trans which is not stand alone inflammatory, at least from what little I know about this territory.

I'd say the term person works well. If it were my kid or relative, I'd be good with 'person'.

This person - and then you have to add "who dressed up like a girl". Are you thinking no on the gender business clarification? Honestly, I am stable right now. Been taking my anti-a-hole meds and everything. Just sincerely curious. No downside.

Transgender: A term for people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth. Transgender is a broad term and is good for non-transgender people to use. "Trans" is shorthand for "transgender." (Note: Transgender is correctly used as an adjective, not a noun, thus "transgender people" is appropriate but "transgenders" is often viewed as disrespectful.)

I don't see where MD stepped out of bounds in his description. A sensitive expression, actually. Personally, I would drop "Fruit Loop" all day long in casual conversation, given my sorry prejudiced ass. Taking a second to think fair, trans seems pretty ok. I don't know how you can remove the basis for the bullying without some form of description, pavulon.

Glad to have the discussion. It's rare to be able to do that anymore. I don't think the reason someone is being bullied much matters. The problem is that someone is being treated unjustly regardless of 'why'. If the person being bullied was physically handicapped, would 'gimp' be ok? Or if they were mentally challenged, does 'retard' make the situation more clear? No. The situational background had already been written. As you pointed out, the issue is bullying. If we are going to support doing the right thing, let's not kinda support it. It's ok to commit to doing right even if none of us is perfect. Here, "tranny" doesn't add any information. Using "tranny" does however suggest that there is something legitimate about what was happening. Again, I fall down on this stuff too. But having a kid with a disability/handicap issue has been an eye-opener for me. That and having been befriended by a guy who happens to also be gay as well as recently becoming acquainted with another really bright and pleasant person who went the full distance on gender reassignment makes me a bit more sensitive to how narrow my perspective has been.
