HMCS Summerside

In her home Port today, memorial day. It's a great honor to have her visit us today.
Very proud of this ship, especially with that name.

OK, I am ignorant about what makes that ship special. So would you please elaborate?

Wikipedia says it: "was designed to fill the minesweeper, coastal patrol and reserve training needs of the Canadian Forces."

Is there something unique about it?

Well, for me, it's special because I live and work in the little town of Summerside, and make my living
on the pier where the ship is docked. Also, it's nice to see this ship here for a visit especially today. Other than that, .....

We don't see many ships in port around these parts.

It is possible to sail from Muskogee, OK to the Gulf of Mexico and that blows many people's minds.

HollyHock.

Not really an intimidating name if you ask me.

It was commissioned after I left so it's not a big deal to me.

Well this ship may have been named after the WW2 ship which in turn was named after this town, so kind of the same thing. BTW I got the homeport wrong, Halifax is home port for all this class ship, I think.

In any case, thanks for looking. From Muskogee to the gulf by which water way? I'm guessing the Arkansas and the mighty Mississippi, ??

Yep.

An acquaintance of mine got together with two other couples and they bought a nice houseboat. They had it trucked to Muskogee, OK. They sailed down the Arkansas river to the Mississippi. Out the Gulf, and stayed close to shore and sailed around the Florida Keys, up the Inter-coastal waterway and all the way to Martha's Vineyard. The had to hire a professional captain for parts of the journey and they only sailed on nice weather. If the weather was bad they would pull into a port and even spent some time in hotels for repairs on the houseboat. It took them many months but they were not in a hurry or on a schedule. I think that would be way more time on the water than I could stand but they had fun. They sold the boat to someone in Providence, RI and flew home.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun. I am not one for sailing unless I can see shoreline. River boat cruising sounds more my style. Thanks for the above.

Cool pics thanks. My wife has a nephew who does that kind of work in Prince Rupert, BC. Unloads freighters etc. Must be a pretty good job I think...

Well thank you for that JJ. 50/50 is about average for me.

While I was looking at this ship, I looked at the stern for a home port but was distracted by a pretty woman on deck, an officer I think, who yelled out "nice car". What else could I say but "nice ship". Bet she was impressed by suavity. I beat it for home AFAP, before I said anything even stupiter.

Yes weather on the east coast is not stellar either. People on the east coast are friendly though.
