To preface I have sensory issues. Sharp loud noises, bright lights, general chaos, stuff like that seriously stresses me out.

Thanksgiving, obviously.

In laws are in town.

I like them but they are loud. Both of them have hearing loss so everything is yelling.

MIL does everything "aggressively". Slams cabinet doors, apparently does not believe in gravity as everything she puts down she slams onto the counter or table as if she didn't it would float off into space.

My FIL eats like a barn animal. One of my biggest peeves, chew with your mouth closed and I don't want to hear it either. And don't fart at the dinner table, that's just not cool. Somehow he always ends up sitting next to me.

The mess is the worst.

I'm inherently lazy AF and don't like to clean so I put effort into not making a mess to begin with.

I find it's less work to not be sloppy than it is to clean afterwards.

MIL is in the kitchen helping my wife prep for the days festivities.

Had to leave as she is destroying my kitchen.

She does that thing where she takes a knife she just used to spread mayo and instead of putting it on the plate or in the sink she just puts it on the counter next to the plate or sink. Now the counter needs to be cleaned. Why?????

She just went to get water from the fridge to take her vitamins. She intentionally started and stopped the water dispenser several times to fill the cup to the brim then promptly spilled water all over the front of the fridge and floor only to walk to the sink muttering something about too much water and pouring half out.

Now they are cutting the Challah bread and my counters look like she ran the loaf through a wood chipper.

I have much to be thankful for and I am and I truly do like them and enjoy their company for the most part but I think it's time to start drinking.

Rant over. I feel better.

That is exactly why no one is allowed to "help" in my kitchen. The older I get, the worse I am about my space being as I want it.

I have pretty much the same issues. I don't understand how people can create messes, be loud, etc, when it is so easy to do the alternative. I think a lot of people are just not aware of what they are doing. Anyway, there are far, far more important problems in life to be stressed about, so my advice is to have a glass of wine, some Epoisses cheese and kick back and enjoy the show They won't always be there in the future.

Great thread. I am likely in the age between you and your in laws. My wife and I have no parents left so it is pretty quiet in our house. No grandchildren yet. But you have to give thanks to your wife's parents for producing and raising a good daughter. Your time will come to be messy and loud if you so choose. I understand your rant though. I wanted to belt my father in law but I held back. Highly annoying man. I was one of the few son in laws he did not hit.

Perfect turkey day today. Just me, the wife and the pups. Welcome change from the usual chaos. ( do miss the kids though...)

No fire calls so far which is rare. Normally have a few idiots burning their homes down in attempts to fry a turkey.

My cooking style is to have as much as possible washed and put away as food is being served. When the wife cooks I am running cleanup behind her. My MIL makes good Spaghetti but the cost in cleanup is not worth it. Literally sauce on the walls and every counter top.

Funny story, when the wife and I were dating she made BLT sandwiches and german potato salad for dinner. She cooked the bacon and was off prepping other items as I was cleaning. Later she said "where's my bacon grease?"... I already had the pan washed and put away. Did not occur to me that bacon grease was an ingredient to her potato salad.

Last year thanksgiving we had 24 people to feed and I was cleaning till early AM Friday. This year the wife and I are doing most of the cooking, now for 6 people, so it's going to be a cake walk.

20 people this year. I'm a pre-first, then cook, clean-as-you-go person. I don't like sharing a kitchen with anyone. Especially not my wife, who wants to use every pot and utensil and doesn't believe in wiping anything up until the meal is over. Early in our marriage we established the rule that "whoever cooks, also does the cleanup". I told her that eating her cooking wasn't worth the cleaning up after.

My son is the same as your MIL. I am working hard to teach him how to NOT be that person.

My wife doesn't cook much anymore because I am home but it looks like a tornado came through when she does.

When I am done cooking it's as clean as when I started most times.

I don't have the sensory issues that you do, but what you described would definitely drive me nutty. I think I'd vote that we go to their place or nothing.

My FIL didn't eat like a barn animal, but he sort of grunted while he was eating, like...um, um, um. My MIL got kind of loud when she'd had a few. But ya know what? I really miss the Thanksgivings with them, since they are both deceased. Yeah, I liked my in-laws.
Today, my wife and I spent the morning and early afternoon in the kitchen, getting dinner together for my 92 yr old dad's visit. First Thanksgiving since my mom passed away in June, so it was kind of bittersweet.
I'll put up with any relative's or parent's foibles, since we're all getting of that age and pretty soon all there will be are memories.
All and all, a good day, and I didn't have to leave the kitchen.
