Years ago here in Wellington there was a Porsche event by the dealer to show off a new model plus Christmas drinks or something. As a minor prank I turned up early and parked the SC in the prime spot on the street directly outside the front door. LOL so many people spent the evening trying to figure out who owned the SC and were speaking very kind words of it.

I did a similar thing at the local PCA concurs event. They held it at the local Airport. At the encouragement of some POC racing buddies, I took a risk and drove my filthy race car covered in rubber clag down the farm access roads to the airport. I parked it right in the middle of the roped off grass judging area. The local PCA president came up to our table and said..."Why are you POC guys such *******s?"

BTW...There were far more people looking at my race car than some 997 cab cleaned with a Q-Tip. It was the hit of the event.

A lot of the folks that are new members have no clue about older Porsches. They don't want to sound stupid so they stick with the other owners with new cars. On more than a few occasions I have seen new members walk up to my car and ask what model it is.

I have also seen a Boxster driver with a 2004 base Boxster act like it is a better car than mine because it is newer. PCA is like any other group of people, good bad and indifferent members. The club is what you make of it.

I was welcomed with open arms in my lowly 914 and have more friends than I can count from PCA involvement over the years.

Depends where you are suppose,
In the 85 911 I had very few people talk to me --did not care as I loved the car.
In my 72 stepside GMC i get tons of conversation -same with my 57 Bel air wagon.

Neither is exactly show quality -- but approachable i guess -- Also here in the Peoples Republic of ILLinois who knows.

Perceptions, and how we form them, are very subjective. I received a very warm welcome to our local PCA some 15 years ago. In the interim, I have been shunned at some events because of my hooligan track rat '72, but warmly accepted at others because of my "vintage 911". I've recently completed a comprehensive rust repair / restoration project, and now all of the PCA's high rollers want to talk value. It all depends on who else is there.

The one steady group of completely non-judgemental, totally accepting, and friendliest crowd I have ever run across in my 40 years in the car and bike hobby has been the R Gruppe. The least pretentious, most accepting car club I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. I had written off car and bike clubs, and the whole culture in general, before I fell in with these guys. I've had the distinct pleasure of being the Pac West region "chaptermeister" for the last decade or so, and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I guess I'll never understand the hatred and contempt shown by so many towards such an easy going, accepting, all inclusive club.

Now it makes sense. Two years ago a woman who was actively seeking my attention suddenly turned cold when I told her I was going to be out of town, picking up my Porsche. Like I said I had a disease or something. We cross paths from time to time but she has strange attitude towards me now.

Upon further reflection, (and don't take this wrong) don't you think it might have been less douchey to just say you were going to be out of town and you'd call her when you got back?

Not that you were "being" douchey, but... she may have thought that your mentioning the P-car might impress her somehow.

Hey... New Year's Resolution... call her and talk with her about it and find out.

I just said I was going out of town. She wanted more info. Its ok, still friends but it was like I flipped a switch and it got dark. I have commitment issues anyway so I would have done something else stupid , if not that.

German researchers studied men's perception of each other depending on cars

Those shown a man with a Porsche perceived him as a rival who was disloyal

But those who thought he had a Ford Fiesta said he'd be a good friend
Not sure why they just didn't stop with the word "rival".

It explains everything else.

Sure you can assume the guy in the Fiesta is your friend if you dominate over him.
