Phase converter single to three?

Moving my Bridgeport mill to my house, its setup for high volt 3 phase now but can be wired for 3 phase low volt too. Its a 1 1/2 HP motor

What are my options? I read about static phase converters that take single phase 220 which I have at home or they also have rotary phase converters that give you a true 3 phase?

Anyone?

VFD - Variable Frequency Drive

3 Phase from 2 with Variable speed.

Variable speed for the mill will be a big help. Most also have 1 touch stop/run/direction

faking 3 phase power at home

We went through this last week. Buy a 4KW vfd from eBay. They are $158 and there is a YouTube video that shows how to program it for a Bridgeport.

So what size wire did you run to the vfd? I would have about a 60 foot run to get 220 to it.

figure out you amp draw and go from there...

5000W / 220v = 23A

10 gauge copper will be fine.

Assuming the motor has a 1.85 SF, then the motor should pull about 2000 Watts or around 10 Amps. It should be fine with even #12 AWG, even with a 10% loss in the VFD.

I will run 220 single phase to the garage. The VFD will be mounted on the mill running the 1.5 hp 3 phase motor. That's the plan anyhow

Don't forget you need to oversize your power supply and vfd by 1/3rd if you are running a 3 phase vfd with single phase 220v. Hence the 5HP (4 kW) vfd.

I just realized that my above calculation is based on 5 kW so 12 gauge should be fine.

Craig, I have run my 3 phase 1.5 HP Bridgeport for probably 10 years now using just a simple static phase converter. I have never had a problem..... that said, I do not do much heavy cutting. I cant remember what brand I bought, but it was well under $100 back then. I believe I have one rated for 1-3 hp. I mounted it to the wall behind my mill and ran power to it from my shops single phase 220 with 10ga Romex that I had laying around. A quick Ebay search turned this one up which is probably similar to mine.

You need a seperate vfd for each motor.

You can get a smaller vfd for the 3/4 hp motor for well under $50.

all VFDs have a current limit parameter.. you'll want to adjust that to the current rating of the motor
