Ferocious

That's the only word I could come up with when I took the Hell Cat out for a stroll today, with the red key.

As you can see I'm almost 100 yrs old and if I want to see 101, I think I'll leave that cat alone.

I agree, there is such a thing as "too much"...and think about it, the soon to be released Dodge Demon is rumored to be 200 ponies more than the Hellcat.

I had several 625 HP Roush Mustangs that were ridiculous. My neighbor had a 800 HP Shelby Super Snake that I drove multiple times. Honestly all of these cars are just silly without drag slicks.

A ton? So you've seen less than a half of one for sale?

I rode in a friends Viper several years ago. It had some crazy engine mods and made insane HP and torque. The rear tires were huge and even rolling at 60 MPH in 4th gear he could smoke the rear tires. I asked if he ever drove it in the rain. He said once a rain shower popped up out of nowhere. He was terrified driving it.

I have never owned a car with massive power. It has never interested me. If I lived close to a race track where I could use it maybe. Driving my ole 1974 914 2.0 was a lot of fun. Scream through the first three gears and still not going crazy illegal speeds has some appeal.

Street tires are like a governor. You nail it and both tires spin and it doesn't make any difference how much HP you have after that. It's controllable and relatively safe barring idiocy.

But having drag slicks can make it much, much worse.
For them to hook up predictably several variables have to be just right. If one tire gets good traction and the other does not, the car can make a very surprising sharp turn.
Usually into something.
Big HP only makes the suddenness more sudden.

I agree with your comments, too much HP. The guy I work for owns this car and is the type to insist all his friends take it out for a blast. I reminded him that a lot of his friends are talentless idiots, and his car will soon be a youtube statistic if he's not careful.

But, he's mostly a smart guy, so maybe it'll be OK.

When does common sense, EGO, insurance rates, and motor technology collide, and end this rediculous HP war ? I don't really want a car that can/will break loose under mild acceleration at any time while driving. I imagine at some point, it will be like 1966 when they stopped making the Shelby 427 Cobra because too many people weren't living to make their first car payment.

I have a Cobra replica and have had it since 1994. It hasn't killed me yet. Yes, it can light up the tires at 80 if you want to, but you really don't have to. My wife drives it as well and she isn't dead either. Maybe it isn't the car so much as the right foot of the loon behind the wheel.

By the way, the stopped making the 427 Cobra because they were making the Cobra Daytona for racing and the roadster didn't really sell well with the price it was offered at and was not a financial success.

One acquaintance I have has an older (late 80's or early 90's) Mustang in the shop for engine work. Before the work started, it was turbocharged to something like 650 hp. His new goal is 1000hp. This was 2 years ago and it is still in the "shop".

Isn't this a big pig car? I test drove the SRT (440 hp?) and it was slower (at least felt) than my 993, and that's before I took a turn. I guess 50% more power will help. In the straights ...

Do these cars come with the obligatory "truck nuts" hanging off the back bumper ?

I had the F150 in at Ryan Ford in Sealy today and they had a brand new Shelby GT350 parked at the service entrance. It was badged Hennessey850 which is the 850 HP version. The 2 guys who dropped it off got into a Hennessey badged Corvette and drove off. Note: Hennessey is based in Sealy.

In the showroom the dealer had a red 2017 Shelby GT350, a blue Focus RS and a black Raptor... certainly not the usual showroom display for a small town dealer !

A salesman told me they were asking $5K above MSRP for the GT350.. they had already sold 2 and got this one in some kind of Ford lottery.

Saw one of the original Hellcats pull into a parking lot and park while eating lunch. It took almost 20 minutes. Discovered it was a friend of one of the guys I was having lunch with. Went out and looked at the car. I asked him why it took so long to park. He said he couldn't even touch the gas pedal in a crowded parking lot or it would spin the tires and slam into something. Just had to let the idle move him around.
