Random accident, or did I jsut experience a little Porsche snobbery
I always make these whacky posts, but I like to hear opinions from other like minded guys. I hope I don't come off like I am off my meds or anything, but I am a pretty normal guy for the most part. I would ask my good buddies the same questions .
Anyhow, I have not driven my 930 the entire season yet. Got it out of its tomb this week, and my dad really cleaned it up nice. The son and I headed off to cars and coffee this am. There only about 5 p cars there when we arrive, and I park next to the only other air cooled car there. I actually parked in the spot in front of him. I of course , look it over as soon as I get out of my car, because it is stunningly beautiful, then my son and I head off, I like get there early and watch all the super cars roll in, and park. We get coffee, walk around a bit, and come back to my car. Meet the guy who owns the other vintage 911 and we talked about our cars for a little bit. I asked him some questions, but I dont think I was nosy or anything, just curious about what year/ motor, history etc. It was a really beautiful early 911. I thought that I detected a note of snobbery, but nothing I am going to loose any sleep over. I am just a regular guy, and I do not dress for success, and also do not get bent about my social standing with others. We see my buddy, and run over to bs with him for a minute, and when I look over, I watch the other p car swing its drivers door , right smack into my door. All 4 of us saw it, and I was like " are you fing kidding me?, is his door really smashed into mine right now, am I really seeing this ?" His door stay had to be broken, because we were not even remotely close to one another. His door was almost at a full 90 deg angle to his car . I head over to see what had just happened, and look to see if there is any damage, and he tore off out of there. I mean he fired up his car, put it in gear, and bolted out of the parking lot . I did not see any damage in the parking lot, and was not really even thinking about the whole incident, untill, just now, I was outside washing my mustang, and walking back to the house, I see it. Son of a bisky, there is indeed a decent door ding there. I am not going to cry about it , the car is not perfect , but damnit. That is exactly why I dont take it out. Did I break some unspoken p car ettitquete? Is this the early S snobbery that Paul talked about ? Id like to think this was a random accident, and he did not even realize that it happened, but the way he tore out of there has me thinking I just witnessed something else. I have been into p cars for nearly 25 years now, and have never really witnessed the snobbery some talk about and assume. I dont do the social stuff and car shows either, I mostly know the track /autocross guys, and fix it upper crowd. Should I say something when I see him again? P cars are the featured cars there next event, and I was going to get my sc out and go as well. He said he would be there . Anxious to hear your thoughts , thanks

He could have been driving a Russian Lada to Cars and Vodka, doesn't matter - he is not a snob he is a douche.
My car door hits your 930 and I am finding you, profusely apologizing and offering to pay for any and all damage. You did nothing wrong except expect the right thing to happen.

So next time you see him, put a boot on his door. As Billie Jean says, fair is fair.

As I was heading over, I already had dishragging him in my head. I could not believe what I was looking at, I expect it coming from a Mini Van with 4kids climbing out, not a perfect early s longhood .
Heck, my 11 year kid knows to watch his door and is especially careful around not just nice cars, but all cars . This was a weird incident .

I'd drive your 2500HD to the next event and park so close to him he couldn't open his door at all. Then I'd get lost in the crowd for a good long time.

Would not expect that from another car guy. Needs a good talking to.
Hate parking near another car and I only have a Cayman. Of course I dont even park my crappy old truck close enough to touch doors with another car. |

Wow, that sucks... like you said I expect this kinda stuff from a soccer mom with an arm full of groceries but a car guy at a car event? NFW! Like Seahawk said he should have came to you apologized and offered to pay for any repairs.
A little devils advocate... perhaps he forgot about the broken door stay and the door swung out unexpectedly? Then sped off in embarrassment? Still extremely bad form on his part, sorry about your car ![]()

I'd have a nice little "wall to wall" conversation with him, if I ever saw him again.

I'll admit that I met more than one person in the S registry who had a strong elitist attitude.
But one willing to damage his car in order to damage another's car? The last thing I would expect to witness. Those guys were more subtle in their nastiness. I'm referring to only a few, but those few were enough for me to decide to leave the scene.

Bring a 944 to almost any Porsche event, or even park it next to an air cooled car. You will then see what snobbery is. I brought my 944 to an Alfa Romeo track event because my Alfa wasn't track worthy, and the 911 guys gave me crap for being there.
That being said, typical 911 owner behavior from my experience. Yours wasn't nicer than his, so you must not care about an extra ding or five. |

Don't you know - all P car drivers are pricks!
Seriously though - sorry about the ding. I try to be cautious in parking lots - but sometimes people can just be jerks.

Never met a snobby air cooled owner myself. There are some with politics that don't agree with my own but I've never seen a case of car snobbery. I think there are enough fancy cars around here than an air cooled 911 is still seen as attainable.
That said, I try not to be "that guy" and always a bit hesitant to say I have a Porsche.

It seems unlikely he would purposefully slam your 930 and risk damage to his own door, sometimes you just lose grip and the door slips away, but it is suspicious he would speed off so anything is possible. The Porsche community is relatively small so odds are you'll catch him at another event, and I would definitely want an explanation.

Was it not possible to approach him at the time of the incident?

My guess is that the guy may have seemed a little douchey or something, but him leaving was more about a momentary lapse of reason, him sheitting his pants and freaking out without thinking.
I also bet that he won't show next weekend. If you read the entire first post, you'll see that he saw it and as he was approaching him, the guy hurriedly left as if he was trying to get away.

^^ He drove away as soon as he hit the door.
It was not snobbery, he simply did not want to pay the $4000 to repaint the side of your car.

G'day!

Since I live vicariously through you (and your threads of course) Fred....I need you to do me a big favor. Next time you see the guy....calmly walk up to him....and give him a swift kick in the balls as hard as you can.
Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter. Your friend, Baz ![]() PS....and please do not wear your flip flops when doing this...steel toe work boots needed for full effect! ![]()

Is it worth involving the police? Deliberately damaging someones property is a serious offense IMO.
Did the wind catch his door or did he do it on purpose? What does your gut tell you? It may seem petty but you have multiple witnesses and a damaged car. Was there anyone with a dash cam at the event that may have caught his license plate?
