I had a friend once who was a British Leyland trained mechanic from Glasgow Scotland.... he took his '67 jag saloon and put a chevy in it...it was awesomely fast.... his next project was an "80 MGB with a corvette engine and a jag rear end..the car was 0-60 in under 3 sec... This guy was no college grad..but he was an artist, a fabricator and competant mechanic... I got as far as the 4th page and decided to post this...I really respected the guy for his craft and his diligence.

I respect anyone for their mechanical aptitude .... we should all be so innovative and resourcefull....

I just wanna know one thing. How did Wayne's new BMW book make it into posts from 2001?

I think I got 4 pages in and realized the same, this could be a long read.

The 454 is huge 'bang for the buck' - but wonder after all is said and done what guys would think if they saw this S-14 motor in the engine bay.... I've considered it.

'82 Targa - sold
'80 928

As an update, Keith has sold the big block 928. His current project is an early Mustang. The plan for a motor is Ford Turbo 4 cyl with lots of boost. I am betting a big V8 will eventually replace the Turbo

I have a V-8, and a 930 transmission. I have spent a lot of time to get the package quiet and softer riding. The car is fun to drive and has loads of power, far more than I need. You can ask the few Carrera S owners just how quick it is to 100 mph. My point is the engine C/G is too high for it to handle like a regular 914. That is why Porsche used a "Flat" configuration. I am sure most of your garages would house a different car if money weren't an issue. I would love a Carrera S for sure but.... My dream is to own a nice sports car I only have to wash and wax, so well built that it needs no improvement.. some day

What?!?! I just met Keith a couple of months ago at ProTech. He and one of his daughters were there 'messing' with brake rotors. I had just become a new 911 owner, so I really didn't want to impose. Seemed like a very nice guy. That 928 sounded very good! Custom fuel injection, right Jim? Looked like his daughter loved it too....:p

Sounds like a flat six

I am in the process of building a set of 180 degree headers just for that flat six sound. EPShttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1158845028.jpg

I like Renegade

for what they do for the 914 which was never a true POrsche, but a 911? (I lived in Germany when the little car was introed as the fahw veh/ Porsceh or VW / Porsche. I don't get it when you can get a 3.2 for a few grand. If you were honest about what this conversion realy cost, you would have been far better off financially wiht a P car engine. Renegade says $20k to do it RIGHT. Harley attempted to patent the sound of their exhaust tone, which failed but that is part of the Pcar mystique. The sound of a flat six and its performance characteristics. OTOH, if some kid were to rescue a rust bucket tub from the wreckers that had no motor or tranny and bring the lines of the pOrsche back on the road then my hats off to him. I go to Hot AUgust Nights in Reno. I like a good hotrod, althoiugh that hobby has been taken over by the rich guys too. ANd the HAN attenedees give my 74 911 with flares etc a big thumbs up.

BTW is my Tauchmeister German made perpetual motion dive watch considered a fake Rolex cause guys with Oysters have commented that they have never seen a Rolex quite like it. www.tachmeister.com $195.
Damned I have to get rid of it now that people think it is a wannabee.

To der Zumwoll

It is not the initial build cost but the upkeep/update costs that caused me to build the V8 Porsche. As I mentioned - I have had two 930s and countless 911s. Also had nitro dragsters and a sprint car. All nice and fun to drive. But, How much $ does it take to build 500 HP flat 6 HP compared to a dry sump small block? And it you happen to break a rod or throw the crank on the ground with a 930 how much does it cost to glue back together compared to V8? Any Porsche elitist clap-trap about newer style water cooled vs air cooled Porsche? Any worries about flat 4 vs flat 6 Porsche engines? The (my) goal is to go fast (quickly), stop fast (quickly), corner, and all else that a 911/930 does. I just don't think it too smart to fork over maintenance/repair $ to old "Hans at Porscha-Werks". I have found a more economical way to do it. I don't wear a watch, have a bubble tent to keep my hot rod in, want perforated calf skin driving gloves or have a goofy bra to keep my car protected from the dastardly perils of hard driving. Here is a web site that shows more: http://v8porsche.blogspot.com/

I like my car but when I first got it running I hated the way it drove. Its taken a year to fine tune the package. Below is a link to a short video on "you tube". I have since replace the seats, built a center console and added Ferrari 575 mufflers which are fitted with there own throttle plates. The mufflers are quiet but have vacuum throttle plates which can be electrically actuated open or closed to create a real soft sound to a nasty loud low pitched roar. This car goes from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds and gets 25 mpg on the freeway. Its rides nice and handles well. I don't think of it as a Porsche, just a hobby.

Unholy Alliances

Unholy Alliances:

Sunbeam & Tiger
AC & Cobra
De Tomaso & Pantera
ISO & Grifo

I like this thread

zumwoll 12-02-2006 10:23 AM

love them

Tiger and Panteras are two of my favs.
I was toying with the idea of a small block in my 914 but after penciling it out it was far cheaper to get a 911.
However if I could affford them I would have one each of the Tigers and Panteras.

dbrisson 12-02-2006 11:23 AM

i have been watching the u tube videos of the 914 v8 and that might just be a gotta have for a fast small sleeper car.

I have a 82 sc and love the 6 but everyone has to admit they are quite expensive to replace or build

since Porsche is driven by engineering
i'm willing to bet big money that this will never happen

V 8 , nope, never

who's up for it?

i'll take seperate bet's for different timespan's

HAHAHAHA hide the V8 thread in the off topic section - Biased?

fastpat 12-02-2006 12:39 PM

There's a guy on the MegaSquirt Success Story forum that's done something along these lines.

His project was to install a double overhead cam Ford 4.6 engine into a 1979 BMW 3-series. That's an e21, the predessor to the e30, though they look a lot alike, the suspension is different.

Power from this engine is from about 340-380 hp stock, and this gentleman is upgrading the fuel injection and ignition on the engine.

The car weighs about 2800 pounds with the stock 4 cylinder engine.
