EPIRBs are obsolete. I remember throwing ours out in the late 90's. I bet nobody monitors the signals anymore.

And I can tell you id for sure bet turning it on a loooong time before!

I think ya got a couple lesbians trying to get famous so they can sell the movie rights and pay for artificial insemination.

Yup..books and movies all based on bs. Notice how clean and tidy the gals looked, dogs in great spirits like it was all fun and games. I've met folks who lost their $hit being underway for just a couple of months on a much larger boat. Being on a rocking, swaying tiny boat like that for months they'd have flipped out. A boat like that is like living in a RV you can't leave for five months..bs. Honestly who stores a year supply of chow on their boat? That's a lot of space to take up even if its MRE's. The horse crap list is endless.-WW

Up til my retirement 7 years ago we responded to EPIRB hit's all the time. And did for the whole time I was in, twenty years. Often it was at the dock with someone moving it around. We even chased one down heading across the state. Owner pulled it off his boat when moving, tossed it in the back of his pickup and headed out. I'm fairly certain we still do. There are also several classes of EPIRB's, depending on the carriage requirements some don't do as much as others. Commercial vessels as well as any Documented vessel have to have them. That's US regs, didn't pay attention too much to safety requirements for other countries.-WW (USCG ret.)

It is a very strange story. When they came off the boat, they looked as if they came from a short cruise. One of them was not a good sailor as she ran another sailboat aground, and it was a total loss. The dogs looked healthy and happy when they came off the boat, too.

I have been sailing for over 50 years and all you have to do is read about the sailors who fell into harms way by mast or rigging failures who still were able to "jury rig" a system whereby they can sail and steer their boats to safety. No one ever talks of engine failures!! Robin Graham of "Dove" is one such example during his circumnavigation in the mid 60's. Looking at the photos of these ladies and the state of the vessel it appears the mast with boom was capable of supporting the main sail to get them moving! The standing rigging (forestay, aftstay, all shrouds) looked intact and supporting the mast. They claim they had a "spreader failure". That's the part of the mast that holds the upper shroud to help support the mast. Even if this failed (bent, came off from a failed cotter pin, etc) the mast and boom can still support a mainsail to give them momentum. The head sail looked like it was flaked on deck but still could be used. If they had a rudder failure (that was not mentioned) jury rigging a rudder is simple................
Least we forget about the EPIRB! No....they were not adrift for five months the way I see it. They looked too healthy as well as the dogs. Rarely are the engines used in any long passages unless you get into the duldrums or your coming into port. Its a sailboat!! And whats with the markings on the side of the vessel? Algae? tire or fender marks from docking? Strange. It all does not add up.
