Apples and Oranges...

I didn't watch enough of that to get to the virtual asteroid. I quit after the video game "weapons." I may admire the time and skill it takes to write a program that delivers a visual experience like a modern video game (even if I'm past the point of having any interest in playing one.) What I don't appreciate is a guy buying a shortcut to higher scores. I'd respect him more if he developed the skill to beat all comers in the game; I don't respect him at all if he just buys a tool others can't also use.

It's like if one guy in the PGA had a set of clubs and special balls that gave him a huge advantage over other players. I respect the ability of the players, not the tools they use. And if only one guy had them...

FWIW, I do appreciate fine machining.

Yet you call him an idiot.

If you considered the programming and artwork that went into it, you'd appreciate it more.

See how this works?

If you can't respect and appreciate someone else's purchases and hand me downs, how can you expect others to appreciate yours?

I was a machinist and I now work in engineering. I see both the value of real things and virtual things first hand.
Well said, they hypocrisy is strong here. The reality is, both are frivolous. As are most things in our material culture, and the definition of value is entirely opinion. What I value you may not, and vice versa. Yet it's rather ironic to lament the lack of appreciation for your frivolous item, while simultaneously mocking others.

Matt, you completely missed my point.

The value is not in the replacement cost of the item, start with that.

Sentimental value, I get it. I was more responding to your comment about the lack of interest in such things being a symptom of our disposable society. I was only attempting to convey that different people place value on different things, and it's rather hypocritical to disparage what material items the people choose to value.
