First lap around the drain complete...

Tesla is finally making enough Model 3s -- but an analyst says many customers are growing too impatient to wait any longer for them.

Cancellations for Model 3 orders have picked up in recent weeks. Refunds now outpace deposits for Tesla's new mass-market electric car, according to Needham & Co. analyst Rajvindra Gill. Tesla disputes that.

In an analyst note delivered to clients Thursday, Gill cited extended wait times for the car, the expiration of a $7,500 tax credit, and the fact that Tesla has not yet made the $35,000 base model of the car available for purchase yet.

About one in every four Model 3 orders is canceled, Gill said, double the rate from a year ago. Customers have to put down a refundable $1,000 deposit to reserve a Model 3, then pay another $2,500 to choose their specific version. They pay the rest when the car is delivered.

The wait time for a Model 3 is about 4 months to a year, and base model customers could wait until 2020, Gill said.

I keep saying; how are they going to make money on a $35k car when they can't clear profit on a $135k car.

Scott R 07-19-2018 05:41 PM

I would cancel just over the plastic hub caps.

Reckon that's what called ludicrous mode. Either that or sleeping at the factory and calling heroes pedos.

1990C4S 07-20-2018 08:16 AM

How did that car miss the building but hit the sign?

Tesla's new car smell, a certain Enron Musk

island911 07-22-2018 09:03 PM

Seriously, a guy who thinks that underground vacuum tubes are a viable transportation solution . . . is not someone to trust with billions.

YMMV, but I think this was pretty obvious to all but the unicorn riders.

astrochex 07-23-2018 02:19 AM

I have a coworker who ordered a Model 3. I will send him the zero hedge link. I hope he gets his car. But even if he gets it, with Tesla’s trajectory, will Tesla be able to provide service?

My Crystal ball is cloudy on that. Oh well, off to the local Studebaker dealer for an oil change.

Scott R 07-23-2018 08:30 AM

That's not even the strangest story I've seen recently. They have a ton of cars sitting in fields and no one is sure why.

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-07-19/why-are-thousands-teslas-sitting-field-california-0

1990C4S 07-23-2018 08:40 AM

Cars sitting in inventory either need a repair, or a part added. Part of the high volume push...

Funny, that’s the basic strategy all the other electric start up are planning. Developed in the technology center (California) and build in China. Perhaps Tesla will beat them to it.
Good move on his part.

Musk will move to wherever they pay him to be.
He makes a huge living off the taxpayers and will continue to do so, he's the PT Barnum of the 21st century.

PT Barnum didn't need tax payer money to dupe the citizens. Now to see the Egress!

Really good con men go where there is the most money. Now, the Feds are crazy in debt, but they can still throw lots of money around.

You know the crazy thing? This is a company that has never turned a profit that still somehow almost hit $400/share and is still, despite acting like being on the verge of bankruptcy, over $300/share. If anyone needs an exhibit A for the stock market being as much about emotion as rational thought, here you go.

Shaun @ Tru6 07-23-2018 02:14 PM

This analyst seems pretty bullish about Tesla's future.

Excellent analysis Matt. At some point the party will be over.

Well, there's that and the SEC investigation.

A friend of mine has had TWO Model S (one when they first came out and another a year or so ago). He is a true believer. He said both leak when it rains--which makes washing them fun.

How people attach their loyalties to companies and products blows my mind sometimes.

And how much do we rip on "German Engineering" ?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, you have not worked on a tail-shift 914 or removed the ball joint from any early 911/914.

Ironic, being on a Porsche board.

Edit: Oops, Richard beat me to it.

What blows my mind is over 300 posts on a Porsche message board about a car few, if any, of the posters have any experience with.

To be fair, the underground vacuum tube transport has been an idea talked about by real scientists for decades.

So I have the ball joint thing to look forward to, great.

At least it does not leak in the rain

What's so hard about removing a ball joint from a 911? It's a 2 minute job.

Are the early ones different from the later ones? I had no trouble replacing the ball joints on my '88. It was a lot easier that old Chryslers where the ball joint screws into the control arms.

Notice what I don’t own right now? Don’t fall in love with anything that can’t love you back. Especially if it’s a financially insolvent car company led by an egomaniac billionaire selling mediocre products based upon unsubstantiated hype.
