The Ace by my house gets by on horse and farm supply sales. They really have such a killer selection of hardware and especially metric. But every time I'm there I see other wearing riding boots and cowboy hats, buying bales of hay or troughs and all kids of other stuff you'd never find at a big box store. The Ace in N. Our local Menards has knowledgeable people working there. There is a hardware store a couple miles from the house we get a fair amount of stuff from, but they are hardware and groceries so some of the oddball stuff they don't have. We also have a Farm and Fleet close enough for heavier duty stuff. I have not shopped at Home Depot for years. The customer service there way beyond horrible. Let them know and they said sorry and sent us a gift card, I sent it back.

If I have to go buy a tool I will use a time or two in my lifetime (or Evaporust) we have Harbor Freight.

We have a Tractor Supply for the far supplies. You can buy cattle sorting gates or stock tanks, and every sort of critter feed you never knew was made. Even salt blocks. They have a good tool selection and lots of stuff for trailers and tie downs.

I don't know if it is a company policy at Lowes or if it was just this store. Or if this guy was just jacking me around.

We still have a few of the old school lumber yards. Right next to a train spur. They have train cars full of lumber delivered. When I needed some 2x12x20 planks to use as ramps so I could park my car over of my scissor lift it was where I knew I could go and get what I needed. It was amazing to see real carpenters in there ordering some lumber not sold in the big box stores. I had to rent a long trailer to get the boards home.

I was real happy to get the pit dug so I could drop the lift into the pit and get it out of my way. The 2x12s are hanging from the ceiling in my garage awaiting a future need.

I have two Lowes (my preference) and two HDs that I visit all the time...all the stores vary in selection and employees. Leave me the hell alone....I don't even know what I'm looking for . Most have decent help, and one HD has emoloyees that attack you en masse....just like the local ACE does though ...

I bought a Weber grill from them this past spring. For $50, they had it at my house, hooked up with a tank of propane less than 3 hours after I bought it. Yeah, good luck getting that kind of service at a big box.
Same story...bought Weber grill from local Ace and they delivered it, assembled it and met Home Depot's price! A friend bought one from HD and they added a charge to deliver it until my friend asked to speak to a manager...only then did they deliver for free.

Ace Hardware customer service is great - I gave up on the other two a long time ago.....
I have them ship to the store for me to pick up so I can examine the thing before taking it home. Not often but it does happen that the item is damaged or is not what I wanted or expected or some other reason not to accept it. If so, I can deal with the store people directly-including the store manager if necessary.

That's got to be that store. I bought a damaged door at Lowe's (perfect for my workshop and I didn't mind filling and painting it). They gave me like 75% off just to get it out of there.

Funny. Similar experience. I bought some cut length pipe from a Lowes about 70 miles round trip away. It was for a rental house I own. I didn't use it. I had the receipt. My local Lowes would not take the return!

I told them that was the reason I shopped at a chain store. They didn't budge.

I have since spent multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars at other competing stores. Not Lowes. I guess I am petty that way. F them.

I quit Lowes after they introduced 2 tier pricing.

I did the samething to Walgreens after they introduced their stupid tracking cards. I said to the b*tch at Walgreens. I said, Look b*tch I can understand an online store needing to know some information about me but there is no reason a brick and mortar store needs to build a database to track what I've bought here and ironically sell that data to Amazon. There is nothing in this store that I can't buy cheaper online and if you're going to tax my booze 25% because I won't use your tracking card then I'm never coming back.

I said the samething at Lowes. I said to the fag, Look fag there is nothing here in Lowes except cement blocks and plywood that I can't get cheaper from Amazon and if you're going force me to buy your sht at inflated prices because I refuse to enter your customer tracking database then I'll just go to Amazon and buy my crap and watch Bezos put this place out of business like he did thousands of retailers who sucks like this place.

I needed a few electrical items yesterday, so the better half and I went to HD. After I found one item, a standard 15amp outlet, I needed help locating a breaker and outlet box. (they were an isle over) The first couple of young employees dodged me, but I caught the next one, he had no chance to run! Said to man, I need help finding a GM slim 20, it was right in front of him, and handed me the breaker. Then told him I need an outside box and outlet with cover, he said right there they are.

My store is actually pretty good if I need help finding something.

I got a $50 gift card from lowes for X-mas. I bought 2 new door knobs and a couple of LED lights for the garage.

The shelves were not organized, it was hard to figure out which item was which price, it looked like they had just finished a black Friday sale or something.

The check-out clerk was having a problem with a couple of Senators who's credit card didn't work (prolly stolen ) and it was taking forever so I had to change lines.

Other than that it was uneventful but i'll prolly go to home despot 20 times before I set foot in a lowes again.

I would like for lowes to beat home despot, but they just seem to miss a little bit on everything. Almost as good but not quite. 2nd place.

Yeah thank goodness Amazon doesn't "track you" like those fags at Lowes. LOL

You are a maroon sir

Growing up in the PNW, we had Pay'n'Pak as our local hardware store. Great stores and, better yet, they sponsored one of the faster unlimited hydroplanes, the Pride of Pay'n'Pak. Gave us all someone to root for at the races.

Well, Pay'n'Pak fell on hard times, was sold, and eventually went full circle and wound up being bought by its old management team, but they didn't own the name. So they called it Eagle Hardware. Being local and kind of small eventually led to their demise as well, as the big players came to town.

Turns out Lowes bought up all of the old Eagle Hardware locations. This led to our local interpretation of what "Lowes" really means - Less of what Eagle Stocked. Rings pretty true...

Try buying paint at Walmart and having color added. You'll love Lowes after that experience.
