Small

Round one was a bit unusual for this sort of racing.

More fun than Nascar. Any idea of the scale speed of those little rockets?

way better than watching Formula E. Used to race off road RC trucks in the late 90s tons of fun.

Are those 1/10 scale? Almost look like 1/12 scale.
Electric cars today with brushless motors are crazy fast.

Raced RC on road cars from 1973 to 1990.

Started in the mid 70s when I was 15 with the Jerobee 2 ch brick radio with the .049.
Our track was in the Costa Mesa Ca. at the Briggs Cunningham museum parking lot.
It made me a car guy for life.
Jerobee - Vintage RC car

At one time I was very involved with RC racing.
Racing and also race directing and announcing our Friday night races with near 100 entries.
That was before computers and transponders and you had to manually count the laps.

Had some luck racing in the late 80s.
With help from Ron Paris in the 1/8 scale gas cars with .21 engine.
They were 5lbs and went over 50mph.
Like this but a little slower.

10th scale is the standard for 4wd electric touring. However, there are many sub classes for different power/$$$ setups.

The interesting thing about being a driver in races like this, is you have more turns on the track then there are seconds it takes to complete a lap. Good human reaction times are about two tenths of a second, so from the time you react to an event at the apex of a corner, you are already turning in for the next corner.

If you are in the moment, you too far behind. You have to project the future of both your car, and your competitor's cars. There also are not the blinders of a helmet/car to keep your attention on the track, concentration and focus are critical.

I feel far more pressure with R/C than I do with karts. If you lose your calm, you don't have the physical release of muscle movement to burn off the jitter inducing chemical cocktail your body creates in that situation. You have to stay level headed, or else you will ping pong off the barriers until your car breaks.

With a full size vehichle, you can flash into passion and survive it, the G-force and muscle work keeps it in balance. With the RC, you are TOAST if this happens. It creates an extra potential for fear, fear of fear, fear of emotion. Elation, anger, these both lead to crashes. It takes very strong emotional control to do well with 10th scale RC.

My favorite class as a driver are 10th scale "monster trucks", that aren't really true 10th scale monster trucks, and aren't the off shot developed "truggy" either. Big tires, ground clearance, high performance.

I built my own as a teenager using drive line parts from an E-maxx, with my own chassis that I fabricated and put together with hand tools, cutting and bending left over pieces of scrap aluminum to make my own frame.

The three most important things I gained from doing this as a teenager, emotional control, mechanical setup/repair skills, and the third I won't name.

I love the RC racing as it doesn't have the gimmicks to "improve the racing" that modern televised racing has sold itself to.

Take some talented competitive people, link them with amazing machinery, and send them off to battle on a track. This is the way it should be.

Ted, maybe you would know the answer.

What sort of class would of been running cars that looked like Group C back in the early 90's?

I remember one time when I was a kid, out west, in a parking lot there was a huge gathering running RC's. There were obviously two different scales, but with the same look. Some classes faster than others. Its all I remember, but I've never on the net seen a class I recognize as what I saw.

My youngest son and I started racing R/C cars when he has about ten years old, so about eighteen years ago. We ran traditional 1/12 scale foam tired pan cars in the stock motor class with a battery limit and 1/10th scale 4WD touring car, also stock motor class with a battery limit. These ran on handout spec rubber tires. These were our indoor, winter season cars.

Outdoors in the summer was all about the gas cars. We ran the 1/10th scale 4WD touring cars, with spec .12 motors and rubber tires. We had a ball doing this for about six years, until he got old enough to drive. We probably would have stuck with it, but first the outdoor series than the indoor facility just kind of dwindled and went away.

Here are a couple of photos of our gas touring cars. These were Associated RC10's, with shaft drive and two speed centrifugal transmissions. We ran a solid spool in place of the diff in the rear, and a "one way" diff in the front. His was the yellow car, mine the blue.

I wound up getting a little silly and adapting a four cycle motor to mine, and O.S. FS26. This thing revved to less than half the rpm of the two stroke .12's, so gearing it was a real challenge. It sounded really, really cool, though, with that four stroke.

Mains for the electric cars in this pre-brushless and lipo era were five minutes for touring cars and eight for the 1/12 pan cars. One really had to manage his batteries to make it to the end. Mains for the gas cars were up to 45 minutes, with pit stops for fuel. You can see in the photos how we refueled, through the windshield cooling hole and a hatch in the gas tank.

This was fun stuff, and a really good way to spend time with my son. He was able to learn to work on his cars, how set-up changes affected them, and, most importantly, sportsmanship. Those were good times.

The fun thing, is that the quote button doesn't work in this thread, so we get to see the thread develop without this forum feature.

Although, if someone wants to take the time they can still put in BB code for a quote.

Yep. Still broken.

The quote function still works, as long as you are not trying to quote any post within the time warp. (which is after post #4 in this thread)

edit works.

Is there any word from any of the moderators concerning the status of the forum?
